An Architectural Historian Field Supervisor (Research Associate III) position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) to provide technical guidance and daily oversight of field survey-related activities at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). This is a 12-month position with the possibility of extension up to 2-years.<\/p>\n
The Architectural Historian will research INL\u2019s historic buildings and structures, assist with the evaluation of historic properties in accordance with the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility criteria, and record inventory information in the Idaho State Historical Society (ISHS) database. The position also entails assisting off-site CEMML supervisor with compiling field research and archival data into a final report to be submitted to the INL.<\/p>\n
The Architectural Historian Field Supervisor is responsible for the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n\u2022 Inventory all historic buildings and structures at INL over 40-years of age in accordance with CEMML recordation standards.
\n\u2022 Work in conjunction with CEMML supervisor and INL personnel to ensure on-time completion of all assigned inventory and survey tasks.
\n\u2022 Coordinate daily access and travel to the site (approximately 45 miles from Idaho Falls, ID).
\n\u2022 Schedule and supervise survey team activities, providing on-the-job training and instruction as needed.
\n\u2022 Ensure consistent and accurate implementation of established field methodologies and logistics for reconnaissance- and intensive-level architectural surveys.
\n\u2022 Review and\/or inspect the work of others to ensure completeness and accuracy.
\n\u2022 Photograph historic buildings and structures in accordance with NRHP and Idaho State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) standards,<\/p>\n
This position shall work from a home office or other remote location with regular fieldwork conducted at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) in Southeastern Idaho. The Department of Energy (DOE) oversees the INL, which is a federal reserve of approximately 890 square miles on the northeastern edge of the Snake River Plain. In the 1940s, the Naval Proving Grounds (NPG) was developed in the core area of what would become the INL and in 1949, it was expanded by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) to create the National Reactor Testing Station (NRTS). After decades of nuclear energy research and engineering, the site underwent a series of name changes of the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) and the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (NEEL) before it became the INL. The INL now supports activities and research that include nuclear energy research and development Department of Homelands Security technologies development and demonstration, and environmental cleanup and restoration.<\/p>\n
Required Qualifications:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n- BS\/BA in architectural history, history, historic preservation, or a related field plus five years of experience conducting field surveys of historic properties.<\/li>\n
- Experience supervising and managing\/directing multiple teams conducting field surveys simultaneously.<\/li>\n
- Demonstrate strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to establish priorities and coordinate multiple assignments.<\/li>\n
- Expert knowledge of terminology related to Cold War-era architectural styles and features, and the ability to apply them in the field.<\/li>\n
- Expert knowledge and experience with methods and techniques of applied architectural research for historic buildings and structures, including examination of site plans\/maps, real property records, and floorplans.<\/li>\n
- Experience photographing historic properties with\u00a0DSLR\u00a0camera.<\/li>\n
- Experience with Microsoft Access and ArcGIS software.<\/li>\n
- The successful candidate must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time, even during inclement weather, for up to 10 hours per day and be able to lift up to 15 pounds.<\/li>\n
- Must have or be able to obtain a valid driver\u2019s license by the start date.<\/li>\n
- The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by proposed start date.\u00a0CEMML\u00a0will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Preferred Qualifications:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n- Meet the Secretary of the Interior\u2019s Professional Qualification Standards for Architectural History.<\/li>\n
- MS\/MA in architectural history, history, historic preservation, or a related field.<\/li>\n
- Experience documenting historic buildings\/structures on federal lands.<\/li>\n
- Prior experience completing Idaho Historic Sites Inventory (IHSI) forms.<\/li>\n
- Working knowledge of National Register criteria to make determinations of eligibility<\/li>\n
