{"id":33508,"date":"2020-07-16T14:31:12","date_gmt":"2020-07-16T21:31:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.evergreen.edu\/mesweekly\/?p=33508"},"modified":"2020-07-16T14:31:12","modified_gmt":"2020-07-16T21:31:12","slug":"job-program-coordinator-environmental-science-center-burien-wa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/mesweekly\/job-program-coordinator-environmental-science-center-burien-wa\/","title":{"rendered":"Job: Program Coordinator, Environmental Science Center (Burien, WA)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Program Coordinator\u2019s primary responsibility involves coordinating the Environmental Science Center\u2019s Salmon and Beach Heroes School Programs under the direct supervision of the Grants and Programs Manager.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/envsciencecenter.org\/salmon-heroes\/\"><strong><u>Salmon Heroes<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>is a program for 4th-12th grade students about the salmon life cycle, anatomy, and habitat needs, ethnobotany, watershed health, and human impacts on salmon habitat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/envsciencecenter.org\/programs\/beach-heroes\/\"><strong><u>Beach Heroes<\/u><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is a program for K-3rd grade students about the nearshore environment, adaptations and food web dynamics, and stewardship actions to protect the beach.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WHO WE ARE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our team is small but mighty at the Environmental Science Center. We are a non-profit whose mission is to promote environmental stewardship and academic achievement through science-based education.\u00a0 We are dedicated to fostering a passion for the environment in our diverse community by getting people outside and using nature as our teacher. ESC prioritizes working with groups who historically have had less access to environmental science opportunities.\u00a0 We deliver hands-on programs at local beaches, forests, rivers and classrooms. Our programs increase science literacy, provide an opportunity for more diversity in STEM career fields, and increase healthy every day choices that affect the Puget Sound ecosystem and our community. We have a strong belief in our mission and are driven by the work we get to do.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WHO YOU ARE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You are passionate about the environment, have a strong interest in outdoor education, and a desire to increase access to these programs. \u00a0You thrive working in a non-profit and with a small team. You are accountable, self-directed, flexible, adaptable, conscientious, and above all else, dependable. You don\u2019t mind rolling up your sleeves and jumping in, wherever it\u2019s needed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WHAT YOU\u2019LL BE DOING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As with every role, these are a sampling of the core job functions and there will be other duties assigned.<\/p>\n<p><u>Salmon Heroes and Beach Heroes program-related duties:<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Coordinating with and scheduling teachers for in-school field studies<\/li>\n<li>Performing program follow-up, including the collection and analysis of pre- and post- assessments and teacher feedback forms<\/li>\n<li>Assisting the Grants and Program Manager in coordinating the training for teen Junior Naturalists to support ESC naturalists during field studies<\/li>\n<li>Assisting with naturalist hiring and training<\/li>\n<li>Scheduling naturalists for school programs<\/li>\n<li>Managing program supplies in concert with the Program Manager<\/li>\n<li>Assisting with the development of standards-correlated curriculum; revising existing curricula to incorporate assessment and teacher and naturalist feedback<\/li>\n<li>Dedicating some time to be in the field delivering school programs as a naturalist as well as some time observing naturalists in the field<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Public program-related duties:<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Participating in public presentations and outreach events on occasion, including but not limited to Summer and Winter beach walks, summer fee for service, festivals, and beach clean-ups<\/li>\n<li>Scheduling naturalists for public programs<\/li>\n<li>Coordinating naturalists and assisting with some weekend events<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Experience teaching children and adults in informal, outdoor settings.<\/li>\n<li>Exceptional organizational skills<\/li>\n<li>Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate well with a wide variety of audiences and stakeholders<\/li>\n<li>Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite<\/li>\n<li>Ability to multitask and work independently in a rapid-paced work environment<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of the topics covered in our school programs \u2013 Pacific NW salmon ecology and human impacts on watershed health; Salish Sea marine invertebrates and nearshore environment ecology<\/li>\n<li>Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions<\/li>\n<li>Reliable transportation<\/li>\n<li>Must be able to pass a Washington State background check for working with youth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Experience coordinating school-based outreach programs<\/li>\n<li>Experience working with underserved communities<\/li>\n<li>Experience developing standards-correlated curricula<\/li>\n<li>Experience developing assessment instruments and\/or processing assessment data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>WHAT WE OFFER TO YOU<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This position is a grant funded, one-year position for 30 hours per week<\/li>\n<li>Compensation is $20 per hour<\/li>\n<li>Opportunity work additional hours as an ESC naturalist<\/li>\n<li>Flexible schedule that you can build to work around your life \u2013 we only ask that this schedule is consistent and that you are in the office when you are scheduled. Weekend event work will be necessary on occasion.<\/li>\n<li>60 hours of paid vacation<\/li>\n<li>Medical\/Dental\/Vision (after 90 days)<\/li>\n<li>The opportunity to work for a phenomenal organization who cares about their employees as much as they care about their mission<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ability lift up to 30 pounds and to stand for several hours at a time is required.
