Chew Center for Shellfish Research and Restoration<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2 ft3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/restorationfund.org\/\"><span class=\"ft2\">Puget Sound Restoration Fund<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(PSRF) is hosting a\u00a010-week\u00a0internship during Summer 2020 to contribute to research on basket cockles at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/restorationfund.org\/programs\/hatchery\/\"><span class=\"ft2\">Kenneth K. Chew Center for Research and Restoration<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(Chew Center) operated by PSRF at NOAA\u2019s Northwest Fisheries Science Center\u2019s Manchester Research Station.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3 ft5\">PSRF is collaborating with the Suquamish Tribe and others to explore various facets of the science and management of the traditionally significant basket cockle (<span class=\"ft4\">Clinocardium nuttallii<\/span>), including impacts to the species from climate change, its genetic population structure, development of aquaculture techniques, characterization of disease and biotoxins and options for management of the species. The intern will participate in design and execution of an independent research project at the Chew Center related to the topics above. The intern will also have the opportunity to participate in additional research, field work and\u00a0hatchery-related\u00a0projects at the Chew Center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4 ft5\">Other PSRF projects at the Chew Center involve numerous species including native Olympia oysters, pinto abalone, kelp, sea cucumbers and cockles. Our work is in service of the following broader collaborative research goals:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5 ft5\"><span class=\"ft6\">\u2022<\/span><span class=\"ft7\">Culture\u00a0<\/span>genetically-diverse\u00a0native oysters and abalone to preserve local populations;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6 ft5\"><span class=\"ft6\">\u2022<\/span><span class=\"ft7\">Expand the ability to restore native shellfish habitat in the Pacific Northwest;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6 ft5\"><span class=\"ft6\">\u2022<\/span><span class=\"ft7\">Understand impacts of ocean acidification on shellfish and other marine life;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6 ft5\"><span class=\"ft6\">\u2022<\/span><span class=\"ft7\">Advance the technology and practices of conservation aquaculture; and<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6 ft5\"><span class=\"ft6\">\u2022<\/span><span class=\"ft7\">Establish a center of excellence for shellfish research restoration &amp; aquaculture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p0 ft8\">Qualifications<\/p>\n<p class=\"p7 ft5\">Applicants should have a strong understanding and\/or interest in marine ecology, climate change, environmental restoration and conservation, shellfish biology or a related field. Competitive applicants will be senior level undergraduate students or recent graduates with relevant research experience and\/or coursework. Students and recent graduates from Native American and other underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants must be\u00a0self-motivated\u00a0and comfortable working independently and demonstrate willingness to contribute to\u00a0community-based\u00a0marine conservation. Applicants must be able to pass a federal background check to work at the Chew Center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p8 ft8\">Schedule and Benefits<\/p>\n<p class=\"p9 ft5\">This is a\u00a010-week\u00a0internship position with a flexible start date between\u00a0mid-May\u00a0and early June. The intern will work primarily at the Chew Center\u00a0Monday-Friday,\u00a040 hours per week. A weekly stipend of $500 will be provided.
