We are excited to announce our third Evergreen Talks lecture of the 2019-20 academic year, on Tuesday, January 28, 6:30-8pm at the Lord Mansion. Our speaker is Dr. Shangrila Joshi, who will be speaking on \u201cFrom Forest Commons to Carbon Commodities: Lessons from REDD+ in Nepal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Joshi, who teaches in environmental studies and climate justice, will be discussing lessons learned from research she completed in the summer of 2019. Dr. Joshi held workshops and a forum on REDD+, one of the climate mitigation initiatives, for forest community users in Nepal. Although REDD+ is widely promoted as a global effort to reduce carbon emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, Dr. Joshi argues that the implementation of associated projects often lacks informed consent by all stakeholders, and it is often the case that community forest users are left out from the discussion. Dr. Joshi conducted the project to raise proper understanding of REDD+ among forest users with the ultimate goal in mind of realizing climate justice.<\/span><\/p>\n
