His research examines how assessment cultures shape student learning, faculty practice, and institutional identity. For the past two years, he has conducted an in\u2011depth institutional ethnography of The Evergreen State College\u2019s alternative assessment practices, work that will culminate in a forthcoming Routledge monograph, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Harms of Grading in Higher Education: Comparative Institutional Ethnographies of University Assessment Cultures<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (2026). The book contrasts Evergreen\u2019s narrative\u2011evaluation model with the harsh\u2011grading culture of UC Berkeley, offering a rare comparative lens on how assessment systems influence equity, motivation, and student experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Melzer\u2019s research at Evergreen has included interviews with students and faculty as well as collaboration with the Director of the Writing Center. Beyond this project, he is widely known for his scholarship on response to writing, student self\u2011assessment, and writing\u2011across\u2011the\u2011curriculum.
