We asked our tutors what they wish students knew about tutoring right now, and here’s what we’d like to pass along to you:

The tutors are not experts, that tutors are available. Talking through a problem is a helpful way to discover holes in your own knowledge base. Tutoring is about learning how to study as much as getting the right answer.

That tutors are not being judgmental about anything the student brings in (work, experience level, anxiety about the assignment etc.) That tutoring can help you make progress on an assignment, but only so much can be completed in a session. That tutoring is more about improving your confidence in writing/your process versus a final product.

while tutors are paid either way, most of us would prefer to spend our shifts actually tutoring. Making an appointment that you miss is one of the best ways to ensure that we don’t have anyone to tutor. When you make an appointment, you’re occupying a time slot that won’t be available to someone else if you don’t show. This might be low stakes, but you’re starting to enter the adult world and you will be facing an increasing expectation to show up to appointments that you make. Treat the low stakes appointments like they matter and you’ll be more reliable for appointments as they become higher stakes like job interviews or work meetings.

What do you wish students knew about tutoring?
