The model uses &#8216;growing degree days,&#8217; an easily calculated temperature-based measure, to predict &#8216;peak onset of greenness&#8217; in forests in eastern North America (i.e. new vegetation growth), which is a key ecological factor useful in phenological studies. John collaborated with faculty and other scientists, all part of the Phenological Mismatch research project, from Georgetown, Duke, and Michigan State Universities, as well as Canada&#8217;s Ontario Forest Research Institute.
