We need leadership that understands and appreciates Evergreen\u2019s values and traditions, and which helps us evolve in appropriate new directions to serve students.\u00a0<br><br>With these needs and priorities in mind, at the conclusion of today\u2019s special meeting of the Board of Trustees, the Board voted to give me the authority to negotiate a contract with Dr. John Carmichael for the role of interim college president for approximately two years, and Dr. Dexter Gordon as executive vice president. \u00a0 <br><br> As you know, John is currently Evergreen\u2019s vice president for finance and operations, and previously served as chief of staff. He\u2019s an Evergreen double-alumnus, was a student of Evergreen\u2019s first president, Charles McCann, and has worked at the college for 23 years.\u202fHe holds a doctorate\u202f in education and \u202fhuman\u202fresource studies from Colorado State University.\u202fFew people who understand the college as well as John.\u202fAll of the trustees and most of you know John.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure id=\"block_yusheczd\" class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\"> Dexter has a national reputation, has worked in the South Sound region for 20 years and will be familiar to students, staff, and faculty involved in equity and inclusion scholarship and activism.\u202fHe is the founder and director of the Race and Pedagogy Institute at the University of Puget Sound, where he is also director of the African American studies program and professor of communication studies.\u202fHe has led curriculum-reform efforts at UPS, connecting the campus with the community as reciprocal partners to advance equity in education.\u202f\u00a0<br><br>Dexter holds a\u202fdoctorate\u202fin\u00a0rhetoric,\u202fculture, and African American\u202fstudies from Indiana University Bloomington.\u202fHe is a leading regional authority on improving higher education, and a great appreciator of the Evergreen approach. In the course of this search process, we learned that Dexter was interested in coming to Evergreen in an administrative leadership role.\u202fIt is an opportunity too good to pass up, so we would like to talk with him formally about a role as executive vice president. The executive vice president will assist the interim president by playing a pivotal role in meeting our strategic plan goals of fostering growth, equity and resilience for our students. \u00a0 Please be assured that we are not intending to expand the ranks of senior administrators at Evergreen.\u202fVice President for College Relations Sandra Kaiser plans to end her service at the college this fall.\u202fInterim Vice President for Inclusive Excellence and Student Success Therese Saliba will assist with transitions in IESS before moving back to the faculty later this year.
