Dear Staff and Faculty, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evergreen\nestablished the position of Vice President for Indigenous Arts and Education in\n2018 for the purpose of elevating and strengthening the college\u2019s work with NW\ntribal communities and our Longhouse programs dedicated to advancing Native\narts and artists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Tina\nKuckkahn-Miller\u2019s recent departure and significant support just passed in the\nLegislature, strengthening our work in tribal relations, we have modified the\nposition to concentrate the VP\u2019s responsibilities more directly on expanding\nand improving the college\u2019s relationships with all NW tribes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Retaining the title\nof VP for the position is essential. The terms of the 1999 Centennial\nAccord between our state and tribal communities call for\ngovernment-to-government collaborations. Given our relationships with tribes,\nthe person in this position will be responsible for nurturing relationships and\ncommunicating the institutional interests of the college to tribal leaders.\nAlso, the philanthropic foundations supporting this position, the Longhouse,\nand tribal artists, expect oversight by a member of senior leadership.\nDesignating the position as a VP conveys Evergreen\u2019s abiding commitment to our\nwork and relationships with tribes in advancing the college\u2019s mission and\nstrategic plans.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In consultation\nwith the trustees, I\u2019ve decided to seek an interim leader for the position,\nthereby giving the next president latitude in appointing the permanent leader\nof this work. Once appointed, the next president will be consulted on the\nsearch and involved in the decision to select and appoint the interim VP. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The search\ncommittee will begin reviewing applications in the third week of May, with open\nforums being held with finalists soon thereafter for candidates to interact\nwith campus community members. Feedback from all will be considered in the\nappointment decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
