It’s\nbeen too long since we got together as a community of interested parties to\ndiscuss the past, present, and future of the College. Come one, come\nall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nagenda for this gathering is to find each other and get situated to the\nterrain, to compare notes, initiate a conversation, and identify next steps for\nour work together…. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nidea for this meeting emerged at the excellent community forum related to the\nClimate Center last week (someone said “we should do this more\noften,” and here we are) but this convergence is not focused on that\ntopic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather,\nit takes Evergreen’s upcoming 50th anniversary as its primary focal\npoint. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\nattached is an opening statement – “the birthday memo” – written in\norder to set a frame for this convergence. We hope to see you there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wait,\nwhat is a collaboratory, you ask? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Critical Genealogy Collaboratory<\/a> (co-created\nby Colin Koopman – class of\n’98) offers the following: “collaboration +\nlaboratory; a venue for experimental research on shared problems across\nentrenched divides.” That seems like a good-enough working definition –\none that can be revised in light of what our work together reveals… <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And\nwhat about this entity called “the Evergreen collaboratory”? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just as there are decades of dialog and debate behind the\nexperiment at Evergreen, the specific framing of this “birthday memo”\n(attached) emerges out of intensive conversation\nin recent months among several faculty – “the faculty\ncollaboratory,” as it were. “The Evergreen collaboratory” is an\nattempt to make it possible for that conversation to “jump scales” –\nfrom one quadrant (faculty) to all 4 quadrants (students + staff + admin as\nwell). Faculty know that they only have part of the picture. Perceptive\naction-oriented analysts eager for conversations about these matters are\npresent throughout the institution. We need to find ways to find each other, so\nthat we can make sense of what’s going on, and figure out how to move forward\ntogether. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did\nyou say Evergreen is 50?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not\nquite – we turn 50 on October 4. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We’re\ngoing to have an amazing celebration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s\ngoing to last all year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s\ngoing to last the next 50 years! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
