COVID             numbers will need to keep declining and health authorities will             have to give us the OK in order to reach that goal. But now is the             time to lay the groundwork.\u00a0\u00a0<br>             <br>             I\u2019m writing to tell you about some recent             policy decisions we\u2019ve made to enable Evergreen to offer current             and prospective students the in-person experiences they are looking             for this fall, while keeping our community safe.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br>             <br>             <strong>1) Evergreen strongly encourages staff, students and faculty             to be vaccinated when they can be.\u00a0If and             when\u00a0FDA-approved vaccines are available to all who want them,             we will consider requiring vaccinations for all on our campuses by             fall quarter.\u00a0<\/strong>             We know             more vaccines are on the way, and the more of us who are             vaccinated, the safer we all will be.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0             <br><br><strong>2)\u00a0Evergreen pledges             to follow or exceed re-opening guidelines in the state\u2019s &#8220;Safe             Back to School Plan&#8221; ordered by the Governor&#8217;s Higher             Education\u00a0Proclamation 20-12-1\u00a0and the\u00a0Healthy             Washington\u00a0plan, as detailed in\u00a0\u201c<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ft.e2ma.net%2Fclick%2Fo8myjd%2Fwmjzfi%2Fcbp4zh&amp;data=04%7C01%7Cwilliaas%40evergreen.edu%7Cfcad5c4bea364ec1037108d8d77f557b%7C22adcff7c06f49a68f2050711c40ddaa%7C0%7C0%7C637496289188578539%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=CqaT5BOf9mOiyRqpbhwIEzJWFeo%2FJOoRcUQj7lG3aXs%3D&amp;reserved=0\"><strong>COVID-19             Safety Protocols for Higher Education Institutions.\u201d<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0 We will consult             Thurston and Pierce County public health officers on our college             safety plans. \u00a0<br>             <\/strong><br>             We anticipate updated guidance\u00a0for fall             operations\u00a0from the Biden Administration, Governor Inslee, the             Washington Council of Presidents and other\u00a0authorities as             well.\u00a0<br>             <br>             <br><strong>3)\u00a0For Fall \u201921 instruction,\u00a0we will significantly             increase the amount of in-person\/hybrid learning while maintaining             some completely remote programs and courses.\u00a0Large gatherings,             such as lectures, will be held remotely; small-group activities             such as seminars, lab and studio work\u00a0should\u00a0be held             in-person where possible. Cohort sizes for in-person instruction\u00a0will             be set to correspond             with\u00a0facilities\u00a0limitations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>             This             reflects our desire to offer as much in-person as possible this             fall, while understanding the need to maintain some offerings             remotely for students looking for that option. \u00a0\u00a0             <br><br><strong>4)\u00a0As\u00a0conditions             continue to improve,\u00a0Evergreen deans and managers should             prepare\u00a0for resumption of in-person teaching and student             services\u00a0where possible,\u00a0developing plans             with\u00a0faculty and staff\u00a0to return for fall quarter, unless             they are receiving accommodation or their\u00a0request to work remotely\u00a0has             been approved by\u00a0their dean or supervisor.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>             We know             our diverse and low-income students are best served in person, and             we know that prospective students are looking for in-person             experiences. We also know from experience over the past 12 months             there is some work that can be done remotely, efficiently and with             cost savings. This policy helps us maintain an equity focus as we             set the direction for in-person for fall, while giving us options             for remote operations where they meet a need.\u00a0\u00a0             <strong>These decisions are just             the beginning of many we will need to make over the coming weeks.
