If I love you, I have to make you conscious of the things\nyou don\u2019t see.\u201d James Baldwin<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.almamatertacoma.com%2Fmaterialworld%2F2020%2F11%2F12%2Fpaftb7vhybr6fmiu1a3xbomfp01eiz&amp;data=04%7C01%7Cwilliaas%40evergreen.edu%7C824f6dbb8ae44deecedf08d8c9324a5a%7C22adcff7c06f49a68f2050711c40ddaa%7C0%7C0%7C637480570631909918%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=W5DU%2BFDk7%2Bnqy5hZBxUG7StoWsK0qDDCFXoM2uqbQKg%3D&amp;reserved=0\">Gilda Sheppard<\/a> is currently a member of the faculty in&nbsp;\nSociology, Cultural and Media Studies at Evergreen State College in Tacoma,\nWashington.&nbsp; From 1995-96 Sheppard was a visiting lecturer at University\nof Cape Coast in the Sociology, Anthropology and Demography Department, and in\n2018 she was a visiting lecturer at Ashesi University in Ghana, West Africa. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheppard is an award-winning filmmaker who has\nscreened her documentaries throughout the United States, and internationally in\nGhana, West Africa, at the&nbsp; Festival Afrique 360 in Cannes,&nbsp; France,\nand in Berlin Germany at the International Black Film Festival. Sheppard is a\n2017 Hedgebrook Fellow for documentary film and a 2019 recipient of an Artist\nTrust Fellowship.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her documentaries include stories of resilience of\nLiberian women and children refugees in Ghana; three generations of Black\nfamilies in an urban neighborhood in Buffalo, New York; and a film ethnography\nof stories from folklore started by Zora Neale Hurston in Alabama&#8217;s AfricaTown.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She currently completed her documentary <a href=\"\/\/2D670713-7B82-4CB7-A27D-10A0FCDB5ADF\/%22htt\"><em>Since I Been Down<\/em><\/a> on education, organizing and healing\ndeveloped and led by incarcerated women and men in Washington State\u2019s prisons. <em>Since\nI Been Down<\/em> has been accepted at over10 film festivals in USA and Canada\nand won the Gold Prize at the Social Justice Film Festival and recognized among\n\u201cBest of the Fest\u201d at DOC NYC the largest documentary film festival in USA. <em>Since\nI Been Down<\/em> has been praised by Distinguished Professor Emerita, University\nof CA, Santa Cruz Angela Davis, at a DOCNYC 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fwatch%2Flive%2F%3Fv%3D768847013696714%26ref%3Dwatch_permalink&amp;data=04%7C01%7Cwilliaas%40evergreen.edu%7C824f6dbb8ae44deecedf08d8c9324a5a%7C22adcff7c06f49a68f2050711c40ddaa%7C0%7C0%7C637480570631919869%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=PuIRoY6Zbw%2FK%2BiMqzg0Pp3GqCyqs4hO1kMtsPKx54zQ%3D&amp;reserved=0\">Facebook Live Event<\/a> with Director Gilda Sheppard, King County\n(WA) Prosecutor Dan Satterberg, and Executive Director of Abolitionist Law\nCenter Robert Saleem Holbrook.&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.seattlemet.com%2Farts-and-culture%2Fa-big-guide-to-movies-set-in-seattle-washington-what-to-watch-stream&amp;data=04%7C01%7Cwilliaas%40evergreen.edu%7C824f6dbb8ae44deecedf08d8c9324a5a%7C22adcff7c06f49a68f2050711c40ddaa%7C0%7C0%7C637480570631919869%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=cdkt%2Blvi3f%2BQvZvWKMEakiPRUxt2S6G1R9eULkjfe64%3D&amp;reserved=0\">Seattle Met<\/a> named Since I Been Down as \u201cWhat to Watch\u201d in\n2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For over a decade Sheppard has taught sociology\nclasses in Washington State prisons, Sheppard is a sponsor for the Black\nPrisoner\u2019s Caucus in Washington State, and is a co-founder and faculty for\nFEPPS- Freedom Education for Puget Sound an organization offering college\ncredited courses at Washington Correctional Center for Women.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheppard is the author of several publications\nincluding <em>Culturally Relevant Arts Education for Social Justice: A Way Out\nof No Way (2013)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many thanks to Julie Rahn, Dave Cramton, Raoul\nBerman and Student Media Interns&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Art Lecture Series presents a broad range of\ninterdisciplinary approaches to contemporary art issues by artists, writers,\nactivists and scholars.&nbsp; The ongoing aim is to bring an array of practices\nfrom a variety of fields, areas of inquiry and creative production that are\nactive in the world beyond our campus. The series provides a lively forum for\nthe exchange of ideas between the speakers, students, faculty, staff and the\npublic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All Lectures are free and open to the public.
