Dear Community,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Happy\nInauguration Day!  As we move together into a new era, it is important to\nremember the struggles that have gone before and the visionary possibilities\nahead.  As Martin Luther King said, we are tied together \u201cin the\nsingle garment of destiny.\u201d  As a community, we continue to provide\nopportunities to come together to honor past struggles for Black liberation,\nracial and economic justice, and the future of our planet under climate change.\n  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

TOSHI\nREAGON is a talented and versatile singer, composer, and musician with a\nprofound ear for sonic Americana\u2014from folk to funk, from blues to rock. She has\nperformed in venues from Carnegie Hall and the Paris Opera House to music\nfestivals and local clubs, and collaborated with many well-known artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toshi will\nbe performing excerpts from the opera Octavia E. Butler\u2019s Parable of the\nSower<\/em>, which she created with her mother Bernice Johnson Reagon. She will\nalso discuss the role of the artist in times of crisis, including the pandemic,\nthe climate crisis, and the ongoing struggle for racial and social justice. The\nconversation will be moderated by Dr. Marcia Tate Arunga, Dean of\nEvergreen-Tacoma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This\nprogram is a collaboration between Evergreen\u2019s Climate Justice & Resilience\nSeries, Evergreen Tacoma, and Inclusive Excellence & Student Success, with\nthanks to the Unsoeld family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stay\ntuned for more details on Black History Month and other upcoming\nevents. In the words of our first national youth poet laureate, Amanda\nGorman, “For there is always\nlight if only we\u2019re brave enough to see it, if only we\u2019re brave enough to be\nit.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
