<br><strong>Sent:<\/strong> Tuesday, January 5, 2021 10:26 AM<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dear Evergreen\ncommunity,<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we head into\nwinter quarter, we write with&nbsp;an&nbsp;update&nbsp;on the activities of the\nCampus Climate Workgroup.&nbsp;&nbsp;By doing so, we intend to provide\ntransparency and accountability&nbsp;for our collective work.&nbsp;Please find\nbelow a summary of climate results, a detailed discussion of our activities, and\nadditional opportunities&nbsp;for your engagement with campus climate work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Campus Climate&nbsp;Results<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Campus Climate\nWorkgroup&nbsp;contracted&nbsp;SoundRocket&nbsp;Inc., a national survey firm,\nto&nbsp;successfully implement the first ever assessment of campus climate and\nculture in Winter 2020.&nbsp; The workgroup received the survey results in the\nsummer, and&nbsp;after much data analysis, released\nan&nbsp;Executive&nbsp;Summary to the public in early September 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Executive Summary&nbsp;discusses&nbsp;trends in the\ndata and identifies challenges and opportunities for growth within our campus\ncommunity (p.5):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>In general, community members who identify as trans, people of color, and people with a disability had a less positive sense of belonging and more frequent experiences of discrimination than members of other groups.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><li>In some areas, community members who identify as women and LGBQA+ reported\u00a0less\u00a0positive experiences of campus climate.\u00a0<\/li><li>Faculty and staff responses reveal considerable dissatisfaction with the overall climate at Evergreen and suggest a need for more meaningful engagement, sense of value, and opportunities for professional development.\u00a0<\/li><li>Most community members said they would like to see more programs and resources to foster the success of a diverse student, faculty, and staff.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Campus Climate&nbsp;Next Steps<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Executive Summary concluded&nbsp;with next steps to be\ntaken by the Campus Climate Workgroup.&nbsp;Today, we provide an update on the\nstatus of each of these steps:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong><em>disseminate survey results and the executive summary through campus communications      and\u00a0presentations<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>President Bridges and Vice President Saliba distributed\nsurvey results and the executive summary via campus email on September 2,\n2020.&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.evergreen.edu%2Fsites%2Fdefault%2Ffiles%2FEvergreen%2520Report%2520F2%252020200901.pdf&amp;data=04%7C01%7Chomchicr%40evergreen.edu%7C3f92c007cb9c4e862bc508d8b1a7650b%7C22adcff7c06f49a68f2050711c40ddaa%7C0%7C0%7C637454680821699797%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=KaHAcAWsVe3RNdJzZzRvXIgOh0NmeGDEEejrd7rf5k0%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">survey results<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.evergreen.edu%2Fsites%2Fdefault%2Ffiles%2FEvergreen%2520Executive%2520Summary%2520Campus%2520Climate%2520Survey.pdf&amp;data=04%7C01%7Chomchicr%40evergreen.edu%7C3f92c007cb9c4e862bc508d8b1a7650b%7C22adcff7c06f49a68f2050711c40ddaa%7C0%7C0%7C637454680821709744%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=stfLQsSCJaWsFDdASGYgoFCOllBeuPhkLWb%2B0GoOtC0%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">executive summary<\/a>&nbsp;are permanently available&nbsp;to the public&nbsp;on\nthe Inclusive Excellence and Student Success (IESS) website.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>2) facilitate conversation sessions about survey results\nin campus meeting spaces and one-on-one&nbsp;sessions<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members of the Campus Climate Workgroup have engaged the\ncampus community in wide ranging conversations, presentations, and workshops,\nlisted below.&nbsp;If you would like to schedule a workshop for your division,\nor would like to discuss campus climate privately with a member of the\nworkgroup, please contact&nbsp;IESS (<a href=\"mailto:inclusiveexcellence@evergreen.edu\">inclusiveexcellence@evergreen.edu<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Campus Leadership Group (presentation and workshop session)\u00a0<\/li><li>Board of Trustees (presentation and conversation)\u00a0<\/li><li>Student and Academic Life (presentation and conversation)\u00a0<\/li><li>Finance &amp; Operations (presentation and workshop session)\u00a0<\/li><li>Library, Media, &amp; Centers (presentation and workshop)\u00a0<\/li><li>Geoduck Student Union (presentation and conversation)\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>3) provide opportunities for students, faculty, and staff\nto share stories and experiences to complement the survey results<\/em><\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout fall&nbsp;2020, students, faculty, and staff\nshared stories and experiences during presentations and workshops. We intend to\nprovide additional space for this goal during the upcoming 2021 Equity\nSymposium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>4) provide guidance\nto divisions of the college as they incorporate survey findings into&nbsp;their\nInclusive Excellence Action Plans.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IESS Leadership has revitalized this work and\nare&nbsp;preparing revised&nbsp;guidelines and templates to relaunch these\ndivisional plans in Winter 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>5) strengthen policies and programs around recruitment,\npersistence, and success of underrepresented groups of students, faculty, and\nstaff at&nbsp;Evergreen<\/em><\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Campus Climate Workgroup has\nreceived&nbsp;welcome&nbsp;news from throughout the campus community about\nefforts to leverage climate data in our review of policies and programs that\nimpact our underrepresented community members. If you would like to share your\nefforts with us, or would like support in\nyour&nbsp;work,&nbsp;please&nbsp;contact&nbsp;IESS&nbsp;(<a href=\"mailto:inclusiveexcellence@evergreen.edu\">inclusiveexcellence@evergreen.edu<\/a>)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Student Affairs\u00a0at Evergreen\u00a0work group has integrated campus climate into their charge.\u00a0<\/li><li>Academic &amp; Career Advising has utilized campus climate data in the development of Holistic Advising\u00a0Policies and Practices Review (HAPPieR)\u00a0<\/li><li>New Academic Directions has integrated campus climate data into planning and proposals.\u00a0<\/li><li>New Student Programs has infused campus climate data into the curricular and co-curricular activities, including an\u00a0EverFi\u00a0training on DEI\u00a0and\u00a02-hour lectures in each Greener Foundations course by staff of First Peoples Multicultural, Trans, and Queer Support Services\u00a0on Diversity, Inclusion &amp; Belonging.\u00a0<\/li><li>The Advancement Team has identified inclusive excellence as one of its six core values.\u00a0 Their strategic plan for 2020-21 prioritizes diversity, equity, and inclusion with measurable objectives across major areas of our work, including fundraising, grant seeking, alumni relations, and events.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>6) promote community spaces and dialogues dedicated to\nfostering racial healing, value, and belonging<\/em><\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.stmartin.edu%2Fnews-events%2Fnews%2Fthurston-county-higher-ed-presidents-issue-joint-statement-diversity-equity-and-inclusion-action&amp;data=04%7C01%7Chomchicr%40evergreen.edu%7C3f92c007cb9c4e862bc508d8b1a7650b%7C22adcff7c06f49a68f2050711c40ddaa%7C0%7C0%7C637454680821709744%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=ws70BHr%2Fcw%2BYsSCyJQPBd%2BOtvbGOZz9Ts%2B47Ze34NxM%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">joint statement with South Puget Sound Community College and St. Martin\u2019s\nUniversity<\/a>,&nbsp;President Bridges reaffirmed Evergreen\u2019s commitment\nto empowering our&nbsp;BIPoC&nbsp;communities through community spaces and\ndialogue. We recognize the&nbsp;collective commitment from across campus to\nfurther this goal. In this space, we highlight a few activities from the\nDivision of Inclusive Excellence and Student Success.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>A cohort of staff and faculty from IESS, Student Wellness Services, and Advancement attended the Association of American Colleges and Universities 2020 Institute on Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation.\u00a0This\u00a0cohort\u00a0hosted a Summer Institute on truth and racial healing. More recently,\u00a0a\u00a0group\u00a0committed to reconciliation, mediation, and transformative justice from across the college has met\u00a0to continue this work on campus.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>On November 23, a group of 25 staff from Evergreen Olympia and Evergreen  Tacoma joined The People\u2019s Institute Northwest for a day long workshop on undoing racism on our\u00a0campuses.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>First Peoples Multicultural, Trans, and Queer Support Services hosted\u00a0extensive\u00a0programming throughout the fall quarter.\u00a0Major programs included\u00a0D\u00eda\u00a0de los Muertos,\u00a0Coming Out Day\/Indigenous\u00a0Peoples\u00a0Day (with the      Longhouse) with two-spirit artist and performer Ty Defoe, Trans Day of Remembrance with poet J.\u00a0Masee\u00a0II, Black Joy with Dr.\u00a0Amir\u00a0Gilmore,\u00a0Performance\u00a0and\u00a0Activism\u00a0with\u00a0C.A.U.T.I.O.N.\u00a0Recurring student led events included,\u00a0Glitterhour, LGBT healthy\u00a0relationships,\u00a0self-care workshops,      Evergreen\u00a0Marginalized\u00a0Voices\u00a0Multimedia\u00a0Collective,\u00a0and\u00a0Night\u00a0Out\u00a0But\u00a0In.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>In  Winter 2021, IESS will offer robust programming that\u00a0furthers\u00a0our collective commitment to diversity, equity,      and inclusion on our campus.\u00a0Events include a celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a series of events for Black History Month, and our annual 2021 Equity Symposium\u00a0on\u00a0April\u00a013\u00a0to\u00a015.
