Dear\nColleagues,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am writing with an update\nabout dean roles, work, and positions for the next 18 months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we announced at the start of\nthe quarter, Trevor Speller has moved into the Vice\nProvost role on an interim basis through July 2022. Elizabeth Williamson\nhas agreed to step into the curriculum dean role to cover some of\nthis work, while continuing some of her responsibilities as dean for\nhiring and faculty development. I am grateful to both Trevor and Elizabeth for\nstepping into these roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This change of roles\nand responsibilities means we are currently\ndown one academic dean position. There\nis critical and urgent work that is needed over the next 18\nmonths to support New Academic Direction development and\nimplementation, COVID-19 planning and response, preparation for our\nMid-Cycle accreditation report and\nvisit, and the unusually large number of conversion panels\nfor regular faculty on term contracts.  The associated workload\nis simply not tenable with a reduction in deans. The\ncapacity problem is further exacerbated by\nthe furloughs that are reducing dean time and\npay (and the overall budget for dean salaries) by 10%\nduring this academic\nyear. For all of these reasons, I am\nannouncing the opportunity for a regular continuing faculty\nmember to shift the focus of their work from teaching to\nadministration for the next 18 months by serving as\nan interim academic dean from January 1, 2021 through\nJuly 15, 2022<\/strong>.  See below for details on how to apply or\nnominate a colleague.  If you have questions, please contact me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are two additional\nannouncements regarding current dean positions. Larry\nGeri, is completing his first 4-year term as dean at the end of\nthis academic year and has agreed to stay on for at least one\nadditional\nyear. I have also asked Karen Gaul to stay\non in her role as project dean through 21-22 (one year beyond\nthe two-year term to which she was\ninitially appointed) and she has agreed. I am grateful\nto both for their service and commitment during this important\nperiod. These decisions will allow us to maintain a\nconsistent level of dean support and provide stability in academic\nadministration for an additional year so that we can successfully get\nthe new academic directions work off the ground. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will review this arrangement at the\nend of this academic year and make a decision about the nature and scope\nof any new dean appointments beyond July 2022,\nwith a goal of scaling the academic deans team to a\nlevel suited to a smaller institution with a smaller\nbudget, and with job responsibilities for deans designed\nto fit the model of the institution that arises from our New Academic Direction\nprocess. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prospective candidates are\nencouraged to talk with any of the other current deans to learn more about the\ndeans\u2019 work.  <\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interim dean will hold\nresponsibility for stewarding the implementation of projects\nthat promote equitable opportunities and pathways for\nstudent academic success and developing assessment processes to\nmeasure student learning outcomes to guide institutional improvement. \nDuring the first nine months1<\/sup>,\nthe focus will be on projects related to New Academic Directions and the\nCollege\u2019s third year accreditation report and visit. In addition, this position\nholds the general responsibilities of all deans listed in the\nattachment, with a particular focus on faculty reviews and working with\nstudents on concerns relating to teaching and learning.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
