Elizabeth Williamson\nhas agreed to step into the curriculum dean&nbsp;role&nbsp;to cover some of\nthis work, while continuing&nbsp;some&nbsp;of her responsibilities as dean for\nhiring and faculty development. I am grateful to both Trevor and Elizabeth for\nstepping into these roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This change&nbsp;of&nbsp;roles\nand&nbsp;responsibilities&nbsp;means we are currently\ndown&nbsp;one&nbsp;academic&nbsp;dean position.&nbsp;There\nis&nbsp;critical&nbsp;and urgent&nbsp;work that is needed&nbsp;over the next 18\nmonths&nbsp;to support New Academic Direction&nbsp;development and\nimplementation, COVID-19&nbsp;planning and&nbsp;response, preparation&nbsp;for&nbsp;our\nMid-Cycle&nbsp;accreditation&nbsp;report&nbsp;and\nvisit,&nbsp;and&nbsp;the&nbsp;unusually large number of&nbsp;conversion panels\nfor regular faculty&nbsp;on term contracts.&nbsp; The associated&nbsp;workload\nis&nbsp;simply&nbsp;not&nbsp;tenable&nbsp;with a reduction in deans.&nbsp;The\ncapacity problem is further exacerbated by\nthe&nbsp;furloughs&nbsp;that&nbsp;are reducing&nbsp;dean&nbsp;time&nbsp;and\npay&nbsp;(and the overall budget&nbsp;for dean&nbsp;salaries)&nbsp;by 10%\nduring this&nbsp;academic\nyear.&nbsp;For&nbsp;all&nbsp;of&nbsp;these&nbsp;reasons,&nbsp;<strong>I am\nannouncing the&nbsp;opportunity for a&nbsp;regular continuing&nbsp;faculty\nmember to shift the focus of their work from teaching to\nadministration&nbsp;for the next 18 months&nbsp;by serving&nbsp;as\nan&nbsp;interim&nbsp;academic&nbsp;dean&nbsp;from January 1, 2021 through\nJuly&nbsp;15, 2022<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;See below for details on how to apply or\nnominate a&nbsp;colleague.&nbsp; If you have questions, please contact me.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two additional\nannouncements&nbsp;regarding&nbsp;current&nbsp;dean&nbsp;positions.&nbsp;Larry\nGeri,&nbsp;is completing his first&nbsp;4-year&nbsp;term as dean at the end of\nthis academic&nbsp;year and&nbsp;has&nbsp;agreed to stay on for at least one\nadditional\nyear.&nbsp;I&nbsp;have&nbsp;also&nbsp;asked&nbsp;Karen&nbsp;Gaul&nbsp;to stay\non in her role as project dean&nbsp;through 21-22 (one&nbsp;year beyond\nthe&nbsp;two-year&nbsp;term to which she&nbsp;was\ninitially&nbsp;appointed)&nbsp;and she has agreed.&nbsp;I am grateful\nto&nbsp;both&nbsp;for their service and commitment during this&nbsp;important\nperiod.&nbsp;These&nbsp;decisions will allow us&nbsp;to maintain&nbsp;a\nconsistent level of dean support and provide&nbsp;stability&nbsp;in academic\nadministration for&nbsp;an additional year&nbsp;so that we can successfully get\nthe new academic directions work off the ground.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will review this arrangement at the\nend of this academic year and make a decision about the nature and scope\nof&nbsp;any&nbsp;new&nbsp;dean&nbsp;appointments&nbsp;beyond&nbsp;July 2022,\nwith a goal&nbsp;of scaling&nbsp;the academic deans team&nbsp;to a\nlevel&nbsp;suited&nbsp;to&nbsp;a&nbsp;smaller institution with&nbsp;a smaller\nbudget,&nbsp;and&nbsp;with&nbsp;job&nbsp;responsibilities&nbsp;for deans&nbsp;designed\nto fit the model of the institution that arises from our New Academic Direction\nprocess.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Interim Academic Dean Position<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Major&nbsp;Responsibilities:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note:&nbsp;A complete description of\nthis temporary academic dean position, including the deans\u2019 collective\nresponsibilities, is&nbsp;attached to this e-mail. Prospective candidates are\nencouraged to talk with any of the other current deans to learn more about the\ndeans\u2019 work.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interim dean will hold\nresponsibility for&nbsp;stewarding&nbsp;the implementation of&nbsp;projects\nthat&nbsp;promote&nbsp;equitable opportunities and pathways for\nstudent&nbsp;academic&nbsp;success and developing assessment processes to\nmeasure student learning outcomes to guide institutional improvement.&nbsp;\nDuring the first nine months<sup>1<\/sup>,\nthe focus will be on projects related to New Academic Directions and the\nCollege\u2019s third year accreditation report and visit.
