{"id":2072,"date":"2020-10-19T09:06:31","date_gmt":"2020-10-19T16:06:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/ltc\/?p=2072"},"modified":"2020-10-19T09:06:56","modified_gmt":"2020-10-19T16:06:56","slug":"recast-provost-fall-quarter-week-3-update-including-a-social-hour-invite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/ltc\/2020\/10\/recast-provost-fall-quarter-week-3-update-including-a-social-hour-invite\/","title":{"rendered":"RECAST | Provost Fall Quarter Week 3 Update (including a social hour invite)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a><strong>From:<\/strong><\/a> McAvity, David &lt;mcavityd@evergreen.edu&gt; <br><strong>Sent:<\/strong> Friday, October 16, 2020 3:38 PM<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dear\nColleagues,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\nare winding down the third week of fall quarter and signs\nof&nbsp;all&nbsp;of&nbsp;your&nbsp;dedication and hard work are all around\nus.&nbsp; I\u2019d particularly like to acknowledge&nbsp;all the staff supporting\nin-person instruction&nbsp;and&nbsp;Residential and Dining Services for their\nwork to&nbsp;welcome&nbsp;and help orient 247&nbsp;students to the residence\nhalls.&nbsp;&nbsp;All except&nbsp;two&nbsp;residents were&nbsp;tested for\nCOVID-19 and all tests came back negative.&nbsp; We hope for the same results\nafter&nbsp;this week\u2019s&nbsp;follow-up test&nbsp;results come back.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Enrollment<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>\nOur fall quarter total enrollment&nbsp;has ended\nup&nbsp;being&nbsp;very close to 2300&nbsp;total students,&nbsp;with some final\ntallying to do. This&nbsp;is 6% below\nour&nbsp;budgeted&nbsp;enrollment&nbsp;target.&nbsp;This&nbsp;decline&nbsp;is\nconsistent with&nbsp;those&nbsp;we are seeing&nbsp;at the other\nregional&nbsp;Washington&nbsp;State&nbsp;universities,&nbsp;which they\nattribute to&nbsp;COVID-19.&nbsp;For Evergreen this&nbsp;comes on top\nof&nbsp;a&nbsp;previously&nbsp;anticipated&nbsp;enrollment decline&nbsp;due to\na&nbsp;recent&nbsp;pattern of&nbsp;graduating\nclasses&nbsp;that&nbsp;are&nbsp;larger than the incoming&nbsp;one.&nbsp;Overall\nenrollment is down&nbsp;20%&nbsp;compared to last fall.&nbsp;&nbsp;A piece of\ngood news is that the Native Pathways Program&nbsp;continues to do well,\nincreasing enrollment&nbsp;by over 30%.&nbsp;I\u2019d&nbsp;like to\nacknowledge&nbsp;Dawn Barron and Toby Sawyer for their big&nbsp;recruitment\nefforts&nbsp;over the summer and for developing such&nbsp;a&nbsp;compelling&nbsp;curriculum&nbsp;and&nbsp;supportive\nlearning community.&nbsp;&nbsp;In&nbsp;addition,&nbsp;we&nbsp;saw a lot of\nstudents&nbsp;make late&nbsp;decisions to&nbsp;register&nbsp;just as the\nquarter&nbsp;got underway. This gave our enrollment a&nbsp;last-minute&nbsp;lift,\nbut also&nbsp;caused some back-ups for Enrollment Services, Business Services,\nand Advising;&nbsp;thank&nbsp;you&nbsp;to our colleagues for their hustle and\nhard work and to everyone&nbsp;for your patience!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Budget<\/strong>\u00a0<br>The enrollment\u00a0picture leaves\u00a0us with an\u00a0operating revenue\u00a0shortfall\u00a0over $1.5 million,\u00a0which\u00a0means we\u00a0will need\u00a0to\u00a0identify\u00a0further\u00a0spending reductions this year.\u00a0 Members of the core budget team will work with unit budget managers to find opportunities for savings and will consult with the Resource Allocation Advisory Committee\u00a0as they do so.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>New Academic Direction\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<br> The creative and generative work we started last year on New Academic Directions is moving to the next phase\u00a0this quarter, after\u00a0dedicated\u00a0teams developed proposals over the summer.\u00a0Our phased approach to this work will start by\u00a0institutionalizing and promoting Paths of Study,\u00a0including\u00a0increasing our capacity to offer paths in high demand areas, such as psychology and business\/entrepreneurship. We will also build the\u00a0systems and\u00a0infrastructure to support new\u00a0certificate programs and a process for\u00a0approving such programs, with a goal of\u00a0offering\u00a05\u00a0to\u00a08\u00a0by\u00a0fall\u00a02021.\u00a0Additional work this year includes\u00a0developing a holistic advising plan, working on partnerships opportunities with local community colleges, and continuing the development of a\u00a0schools\u00a0proposal for a faculty vote later in the quarter.\u00a0Threaded through all of this is a commitment to serving new majority students and working adults by offering hybrid online and low residency\u00a0curricular opportunities that meet the needs of those who wish to study\u00a0part-time.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Other proposals\u00a0will move forward\u00a0incrementally, while we look for\u00a0fundraising\u00a0opportunities to support\u00a0them.
