The\nArt Lecture Series presents a broad range of interdisciplinary approaches to\ncontemporary art issues by artists, writers, activists and scholars.  The\nongoing aim is to bring an array of practices from a variety of fields, areas\nof inquiry and creative production that are active in the world beyond our\ncampus. The series provides a lively forum for the exchange of ideas between\nthe speakers, students, faculty, staff and the public. All are welcome. Please\njoin us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WEEK 2, 10\/7  <\/strong>Clifford\nOwens<\/a> is an artist who makes\nphotographs, performance art, works on paper, videos, installations, and texts.\nHis art has appeared in many solo and group exhibitions, both nationally and\ninternationally. Owens’ solo museum exhibitions include Anthology<\/em> at MoMA PS1, Better the Rebel You Know<\/em> at Home in Manchester,\nEngland, and Perspectives 173: Clifford\nOwens<\/em> at the Contemporary Arts\nMuseum Houston; and group exhibitions featuring his work include Freestyle<\/em>, Greater New York 2005<\/em>, and Performance Now: The First\nDecade of the New Century<\/em>.\nHis performance-based projects have been widely presented in museums and\ngalleries, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and\nthe Brooklyn Academy of Music. This year he was awarded a Guggenheim\nfellowship. Owens was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He lives and works in New\nYork City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though he rejects the label\n“performance artist,” NY-based visual artist Clifford Owens is known\nfor creating work that not only engages physically and emotionally with the\nviewer but also frequently involves the use of his own body. Despite his\nprofessional reputation as a provocateur, Owens\u2019 advice for emerging artists\ninvolves such genteel topics as mentorship, community, and love. \u201cThe art world\nis not necessarily a loving space,\u201d he says. \u201cThey love what you produce maybe,\nbut not you.
