The series provides a lively forum for the exchange of ideas between\nthe speakers, students, faculty, staff and the public. All are welcome. Owens&#8217; solo museum exhibitions include <em>Anthology<\/em> at MoMA PS1, <em>Better the Rebel You Know<\/em> at Home in Manchester,\nEngland, and <em>Perspectives 173: Clifford\nOwens<\/em> at the Contemporary Arts\nMuseum Houston; and group exhibitions featuring his work include <em>Freestyle<\/em>, <em>Greater New York 2005<\/em>, and <em>Performance Now: The First\nDecade of the New Century<\/em>.\nHis performance-based projects have been widely presented in museums and\ngalleries, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and\nthe Brooklyn Academy of Music. This year he was awarded a Guggenheim\nfellowship. Owens was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He lives and works in New\nYork City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though he rejects the label\n&#8220;performance artist,&#8221; NY-based visual artist Clifford Owens is known\nfor creating work that not only engages physically and emotionally with the\nviewer but also frequently involves the use of his own body. Despite his\nprofessional reputation as a provocateur, Owens\u2019 advice for emerging artists\ninvolves such genteel topics as mentorship, community, and love. \u201cThe art world\nis not necessarily a loving space,\u201d he says. \u201cThey love what you produce maybe,\nbut not you.
