 Greetings, Colleagues, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As announced last\nspring, classes will begin next Tuesday rather than Monday (see the\noriginal message below).  This change reflects a recommendation by\nthe Academic Deans that resulted in a decision by the\nSenior Leadership Team to no longer hold the first day of class on a major\nreligious holiday.  This year, Yom Kippur begins the evening of Sunday,\nSeptember 27 and continues to the evening of the Monday, September 28th<\/sup>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the College will\nbe open on Monday the 28th<\/sup>, there will be no instruction and limited\nco-curricular activities that day.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please join me in wishing\nour Jewish faculty, staff, and students celebrating Yom Kippur peace and good\nhealth during this holy time and throughout the year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nSubject: Change to First Day of Classes, Fall\n2020 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dear faculty and staff colleagues, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This coming fall, classes will begin on Tuesday, September\n29, 2020*.  This change will affect all Evergreen undergraduate and\ngraduate students, across all programs and sites and was first announced at a\nwinter quarter faculty meeting, but our email was delayed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This change results from the Academic Deans and Senior\nLeadership Team deciding that for any given quarter, we will no longer schedule\nthe first day of class on a major religious holiday. In 2020, the Jewish\nholiday of Yom Kippur begins in the evening of September 27,\nand continues to the evening of September 28.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first day of class has greater stakes for student attendance\nthan any other day of the quarter. Students make decisions about the\nsuitability of the class or program, and faculty often decide how many and\nwhich students they can enroll, based on first day attendance. Missing the\nfirst day of class can therefore result in more serious challenges to student\nsuccess.  As such, classes and essential programming will commence on\nSeptember 29th. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new first day of classes will automatically be updated\nin Schedule Evergreen. There will be secondary effects to Orientation, student\nprogramming, Residential and Dining Services, and other offices on campus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While classes will not begin until Tuesday, the remainder\nof the College will be operational on Monday, September 28. For systems and\naccounting purposes, the official quarter start and end dates will remain\n9\/28\/20 – 12\/18\/20. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
