Dear Colleagues, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we\nlook forward to welcoming our fall quarter students, please take a moment to\nmake sure you\u2019ve reported<\/a> your learning around\nequity and inclusion, particularly if you\u2019ve recently participated in a summer\ninstitute or workshop. Please submit your report for 2019-20 by October 15<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our\nstudents will be asking all of us some hard questions in the wake of the racial justice\nmovements unfolding on the streets. One way you can respond is to design an action plan for improving the\ninclusiveness of your teaching (see below for some guidance on this). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We encourage you to seek support from other faculty in implementing your plan. As one faculty member observed: \u201cIt\u2019s one thing to hear terms\nlike institutional racism and read definitions. It’s quite another to gain the\ntrust of colleagues who then share experiences that help you understand what\nthose terms really mean–the pain, anguish, feelings of being less than that\nresult from something over which you had no control.\u201d This is the kind of deep\nlistening and learning that will give us the resilience we need to face the\nchallenges ahead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\ngood news is that dozens of faculty participated in equity-focused summer institutes, but so far only 17 have reported their participation for summer 2020, and only 37 have reported ongoing professional\ndevelopment in this area since last October. As a reminder, the 2020 summer\ninstitute program<\/a> includes information about\nwhich institutes meet the annual training requirement.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thank\nyou for taking some time to mark the work you\u2019ve already done and to set goals\nfor the upcoming year. Now, more than ever, we must recommit ourselves\nto the promise of providing truly accessible learning environments for all students.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: What if I am planning to do a professional development workshop in December?  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A:\nPlease document that learning on next year\u2019s form; this deadline is for the\n19-20 annual requirement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: Where did this requirement come from? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A:\nThe attached MOU (May 2017) requires the College to provide ongoing\nprofessional development for faculty around equity and inclusion and requires\nfaculty to participate in these opportunities on an annual basis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: What does a meaningful action plan look like? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A:\nA good place to start is with the \u201cInclusion by Design\u201d syllabus analysis tool\nfeatured in the Learning and Teaching Commons summer\nnewsletter.<\/a> Our expectation is that faculty members will try out a new set of practices and reflect critically<\/a> on how well those practices have worked, rather than learning more passively by, for example,\nlistening to a lecture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A: Consider finding a group of\ncolleagues who can keep you on track with your own learning goals.
