Dear Faculty Colleagues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we wind down spring quarter, we\nwant to note some temporary adjustments to a couple of policies that were\nrecommended by the Deans’ Area and approved by the Agenda Committee. These\npolicies have to do with adjusting expectations for student performance given\nthe COVID-19 pandemic, and now also in terms of the more recent situation\naround nationwide protests against police brutality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first policy addresses\noffering asynchronous routes to academic success for students who may not have\nthe technological, economic or emotional means to meet in synchronous Zoom\nmeetings at all the right times.  It reflects at the level of policy\nthe message the deans and Provost have shared with faculty repeatedly\nthroughout spring quarter, stating that students will be given access to\nalternative routes to earning comparable if not identical credit when\ncircumstances make it impossible for them to participate in synchronous work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second is, most simply put, a\none-quarter suspension of our usual Required Leave of Absence policy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In both cases, we are following\nthe lead of many campuses across the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All quarter, faculty have been\ngenerating creative ways to accommodate students differentially impacted by\nthese crises, and we encourage continued collaboration and conversation about\nbest practices and possibilities as this very difficult quarter comes to an\nend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Process statement: utilizing the\nexperimental structure of the Agenda Committee making some decisions on behalf\nof the faculty, the Agenda Committee has approved these adjustments to the\nfaculty handbook. The end date for these temporary adjustments is unknown but\nwill coincide with campus readiness to move into Phase 4 of the governor\u2019s\nSafe Start plan. The Agenda Committee will discuss at its next retreat in\nlate August the procedure for determining precisely when and how the temporary\nhandbook adjustments will be lifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
