{"id":1542,"date":"2020-05-19T09:07:42","date_gmt":"2020-05-19T16:07:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/ltc\/?p=1542"},"modified":"2020-08-17T09:32:32","modified_gmt":"2020-08-17T16:32:32","slug":"recast-change-to-first-day-of-classes-fall-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/ltc\/2020\/05\/recast-change-to-first-day-of-classes-fall-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"RECAST | Change to First Day of Classes, Fall 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>From:<\/strong>\nDrake, Jennifer &lt;<a href=\"mailto:drakej@evergreen.edu\">drakej@evergreen.edu<\/a>&gt;<br><strong>Date:<\/strong> May 18, 2020, 4:34 PM -0700\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dear faculty and staff colleagues,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This coming fall, classes will begin on\nTuesday, September 29, 2020*. &nbsp;<\/strong>This\nchange will affect all Evergreen undergraduate and graduate students, across\nall programs and sites and was\nfirst announced at a winter quarter faculty meeting, but our email was delayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This change results from the Academic Deans\nand Senior Leadership Team deciding that for any given quarter, we will no\nlonger schedule the first day of class on a major religious holiday. In 2020,\nthe Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur begins in the evening of September 27, and\ncontinues to the evening of September 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first day of class has greater stakes\nfor student attendance than any other day of the quarter. Students make\ndecisions about the suitability of the class or program, and faculty often\ndecide how many and which students they can enroll, based on first day\nattendance. <strong>Missing the first day of class can therefore result in more\nserious challenges to student success.<\/strong>&nbsp; <strong>As such, classes and essential programming\nwill commence on September 29<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new first day of classes will\nautomatically be updated in Schedule Evergreen. There will be secondary effects\nto Orientation, student programming, Residential and Dining Services, and other\noffices on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While classes will not begin until Tuesday,\nthe remainder of the College will be operational on Monday, September 28.
