{"id":1503,"date":"2020-05-11T12:31:45","date_gmt":"2020-05-11T19:31:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/ltc\/?p=1503"},"modified":"2020-05-11T12:31:54","modified_gmt":"2020-05-11T19:31:54","slug":"recast-reaffirming-our-values-community-activities-student-support-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/ltc\/2020\/05\/recast-reaffirming-our-values-community-activities-student-support-services\/","title":{"rendered":"RECAST | Reaffirming Our Values:  Community Activities &amp; Student Support Services"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>From:<\/strong> Saliba, Therese &lt;<a href=\"mailto:SalibaT@evergreen.edu\">SalibaT@evergreen.edu<\/a>&gt; <br><strong>Sent:<\/strong> Monday, May 11, 2020 9:11 AM\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dear Greener Community,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our deep gratitude to students, staff and faculty for promoting\npublic health AND remaining true to Evergreen\u2019s innovative spirit!&nbsp; Your\ncaring and creative energy has propelled us past mid-spring quarter, with\nvibrant virtual learning and working communities that support our mission and\nvalues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In these difficult times, we seek to amplify Evergreen\u2019s values of\ninclusivity, belonging, and respect.&nbsp; We stand against the racism,\nxenophobia and stigma fueled by this crisis, and the scapegoating particularly\nof Asian Americans and immigrants.&nbsp; We aim to support all students and\ncommunity members, recognizing that those who have disproportionately impacted\nby COVID-19 include tribal nations, communities of color, people with\ndisabilities, and individuals experiencing poverty, unemployment, or housing\nand food insecurity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through amazing collaborative efforts across the college,\nEvergreen has taken a number of steps to provide <em>services and supports<\/em>\nto our students, and to <em>educate our community<\/em> on the differential\nimpacts of the pandemic and emergent movements for community support,\nsolidarity, and resilience.&nbsp; &nbsp;Below are just some of those services\nand activities. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Learning, Activities, and Wellness&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\nEvergreen\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pandemic Academy<\/a> offers\nweekly programs by Evergreen faculty and guest speakers addressing the impacts\nof structural inequities\u2014race, class, gender, sexuality, ability, etc.\u2014and\ninspiring examples of community organizing, mutual aid, and resilience. Many\nacademic programs are providing local to global analysis of the pandemic, its\nresultant economic hardships, and the possibilities for environmental and\nsocial change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\nOur student journalists are also writing about these issues in the\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooperpointjournal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cooper Point Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The\nLonghouse is commissioning instructional indigenous arts videos to connect\nhealth and wellness with Native arts and cultures: see <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/longhousenews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/356\/2020\/05\/Longhouse-Video-Tutorial-Submission-App-2020_MAC.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/longhousenews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/356\/2020\/05\/Longhouse-Video-Tutorial-Submission-App-2020_MAC.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\nThis year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/tacomaspringfair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Evergreen-Tacoma Spring\nCommunity Fair<\/a>&nbsp;will feature student research projects,\nstaff and faculty work in their virtual Mimms\/Hardiman Lyceum Hall. From May\n16-23,&nbsp;the global public and community members will visit the fair\nand interact with these engaging and empowering projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.evergreen.edu\/health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Student Wellness Services<\/a> continues to be\nopen Monday through Friday with remote services for Medical, Mental Health and\nOffice of Sexual Violence Prevention. Remote support groups and workshops\ninclude Graduation Anxiety, Cultivating Self Compassion, an LGBTQ+ drop-in\nsupport group, Self-Care During Covid, and Relationships While Social Distancing.\nMore information can be found at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evergreen.edu\/health\/health-education-groups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.evergreen.edu\/health\/health-education-groups<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Student &amp; Community Support Services<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\n<em>Emergency Gift Aid.&nbsp; <\/em>Thanks to the generosity of\ndonors, alumni, and the reallocation of college funds, over $130,000 in gift\nemergency aid has been distributed to Evergreen students.&nbsp; These emergency\nfunds continue to be replenished and are available for any basic living or\neducational needs.&nbsp; If you are a student in need, please see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evergreen.edu\/financialaid\/emergency-resources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.evergreen.edu\/financialaid\/emergency-resources<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\n<em>Cares Act Funds<\/em>.&nbsp; Nearly 1,700 eligible students received $500 to $750 in CARES\n(Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act relief funds last week. A\nFAFSA or WASFA is required to determine eligibility and can still be submitted.\nMore information and instructions on submitting a FAFSA or WASFA is here <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evergreen.edu\/covid19\/cares-act-funds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.evergreen.edu\/covid19\/cares-act-funds<\/a>.\nAlthough international and undocumented students were excluded from the CARES\nAct, they are receiving equivalent awards through the Evergreen Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\n<em>Food Aid<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evergreen.edu\/covid19\/food-bank-distribution-point\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Thurston County Food Bank<\/a>\nemergency community distribution site at Evergreen opened May 5, and served\nover 90 individuals and households at Evergreen and the wider community! The\nnext Food Bank Pop-Up is May 19, 10 am &#8211; 3 pm in Parking Lot C with drive up\nand walk up options.&nbsp; Vegan boxes also available. The GSU &nbsp;is\norganizing food delivery for those in need; please contact <a href=\"mailto:geoduckunion@evergreen.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">geoduckunion@evergreen.edu<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\n<em>Technology support<\/em>.&nbsp; Faculty attended \u201cKeep\nTeaching\u201d Institutes over spring break to enable a rapid shift to remote\nteaching, and students attended \u201cKeep Learning\u201d Institutes in weeks one and\ntwo, all designed with equity and student success at the center. Also, 506\nstudents have answered our Technology Needs Survey; we reached out individually\nto every student who surfaced a need and provided contact info to connect them\nwith resources. We purchased mobile Assistive Technology tools for our students\nwith Access needs, and provided specialized software access to graduate\nstudents.&nbsp; If you need a Chromebook or Assistive Technologies, or need\nhelp troubleshooting on your internet connection, please create a help ticket\nat help.evergreen.edu<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\n<em>Wifi hotspots now available state<\/em>-wide.\n&nbsp;A map of over\n400 public wifi hotspots can be found at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.driveinwifi.wa.gov%2F&amp;data=02%7C01%7C%7Cb4d491e0a0314653a9ff08d7f2dc8a85%7C22adcff7c06f49a68f2050711c40ddaa%7C0%7C0%7C637244901341482092&amp;sdata=KlG%2BbL4yVKOQtN5eSUCUzSZrsBWHf0fsfoGhonxIZp8%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>www.driveinwifi.wa.gov<\/strong><\/a><strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong>Click\non each of the dots\/locations on the map to find out information about whether\nor not there is a password, and times that service is available.&nbsp; The\nclosest hotspots to Evergreen are at the local Timberland Libraries- Olympia,\nLacey and Tumwater; spots are also available in Shelton and outer rural\nareas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <em>Library\nsupport<\/em> is also provided with equity in mind. More than 200 Chromebooks\nhave been distributed to students in Olympia and Tacoma. If an assigned text is\npublished in ebook format, we purchased it in that format, making most titles\navailable before the start of classes. The scholarly publishing world has made\nmany electronic resources freely available at this time, and these are\ncollected for your use at <a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.evergreen.edu\/electronic-resources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">http:\/\/libguides.evergreen.edu\/electronic-resources<\/a>.\nWe expanded our reference chat service, we offer library workshops via Zoom,\nand we continue to purchase ebooks and film streaming by request to meet classroom\nand research needs.
