A note from the Commons Faculty Scholar, Joli Sandoz"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>May I say how fortunate I feel to be part of Evergreen\u2019s community of educators, especially in the midst of COVID-19? Here\u2019s why:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"652\" height=\"299\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/ltc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/440\/2020\/03\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/ltc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/440\/2020\/03\/image.png 652w, https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/ltc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/440\/2020\/03\/image-300x138.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/ltc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/440\/2020\/03\/image-600x275.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 652px) 100vw, 652px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And here\u2019s evidence for this claim that collectively Evergreen staff and faculty \u2013 educators all \u2013\u00a0have already begun practicing generative emergence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The questions raised by folks about how to support online learning and learners experientially, inclusively, and collaboratively. Many, many of these questions have demonstrated awareness of our students\u2019 situations, and concern regarding how best to scaffold their learning.<\/li><li>Link lists being shared on Evergreen DLs directing us to resources and people here and elsewhere who are dealing with similar big changes in prompting and facilitating learning.<\/li><li>The very practical (and helpful) \u201cKeep Teaching\u201d short workshops created and facilitated within the week by Julia Metzker, Elizabeth Williamson, and the rest of the \u201cKeep Teaching\u201d Team.<\/li><li>Concerns voiced about the communities surrounding Evergreen, and how we might mesh student course and program work with humanitarian efforts such as food distribution.<\/li><li>Staff and faculty coming together rapidly and collaboratively to design longer \u201cKeep Teaching\u201d Institutes, to support moving to learning remotely. Details to come!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, three quick ideas from resilience research that may provide guidance as we move ahead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>One definition of social resilience, borrowed from the Glasgow (Scotland)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gcph.co.uk\/assets\/0000\/4197\/Resilience_Briefing_Paper_Concepts_Series_12.pdf\">Centre for Population Health<\/a>, reads: \u201cResilience is when the world and activity within it remain understandable, manageable and meaningful despite changed circumstances\u201d (6).\u00a0\u00a0Relationships \u2013 and especially equitable relationships \u2013\u00a0are the key to both individual and community resilience. Equity and openness to diversity of background, experience, and thinking are at the center of successful resilience efforts.<\/li><li>Communal efficacy: The belief shared by a group of people, that they \u2013 we\u00a0\u2013\u00a0CAN achieve what we need to achieve.<\/li><li>Self-care matters.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>You know where I am:&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:sandozj@evergreen.edu\">sandozj@evergreen.edu<\/a>.
