The Indian Plum is blooming, and\neven a few early trilliums are showing their bright faces. Spring is on its\nway!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Huge thanks to all of you who participated in our recent <strong>Mentoring\nDay<\/strong> and <strong>Preview Day<\/strong>. These are great opportunities for information\nsharing, questions and support for new and existing students. We appreciate\nthose of you who helped out!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>UPCOMING EVENTS AND DEADLINES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Willi Unsoeld Speaker. <\/strong>Please attend the <strong>Tim Wise<\/strong>\nlecture at <strong>11:00 on Wednesday, February 26<\/strong>, in Purce Hall, Lecture Hall\n1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SURF projects. <\/strong>Thanks to all of you who submitted SURF projects for our students this summer. What a pleasure to read such a diverse set of offerings\u2014you are all doing some exciting work! The applications are now live on the website (insert). Please encourage students to apply. [<a href=\"https:\/\/evergreenkatief.sjc1.qualtrics.com\/jfe\/form\/SV_cYXwJKf4RtjXRS5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Click here for details (opens in a new tab)\">Click here for details<\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>State of the College Address:<\/strong>&nbsp;Please consider\nattending the <em>State of the College Address<\/em> on Monday, <strong>March 2 at\n3:30pm in Purce Hall<\/strong>, Lecture Hall 1. Following these remarks, there will\nbe opportunity for informal discussion and light refreshments in the Purce Hall\nrotunda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Individual Learning Contract and Internship Deadline<\/strong>:\nPlease remember that <strong>Friday of Week 10 (March 13<\/strong>, <strong>2020<\/strong>), is the\ndeadline for faculty approval of spring quarter ILCs and internships. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>In our reviews we look for<strong>:<\/strong>&nbsp;(1) the quantity and quality of college-level work; (2) clear objectives and activities; (3) any conflicts of interest; (4) clearances and signatures. <\/li><li>Students cannot exceed 48 credits in either category of independent work, and if students write an ILC or INT early in their studies we may advise them that ILCs are primarily meant for advanced independent work. <\/li><li><strong><em>Please encourage students to pay attention to this deadline.<\/em><\/strong> The number of late applications has become quite staggering; let\u2019s please tighten this up if possible. (Part of the reason we set the deadline in the previous quarter was to avoid last-minute and poorly conceived applications. Aiming to support the spirit of this policy is still very relevant.)<\/li><li>&nbsp;Any ILC or INT submitted by the student&nbsp;after March 13&nbsp;will require a request to waive the deadline.&nbsp;This form automatically populates in the ILC system in my.evergreen.edu. Students should not use the outdated paper form. &nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>END OF QUARTER REMINDERS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Self-Evaluations by Students<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Students are required to write a self-evaluation for each program they take,&nbsp;and this self-evaluation should be \u201cturned in\u201d through&nbsp;my.evergreen.edu.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Students are not obliged to post self-evaluations to their transcript. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Faculty Evaluations by Students<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Students have a right to submit feedback privately, visible to faculty only after evaluations and credits have been posted.&nbsp; <\/li><li>Please note: a practice in the past was for faculty to ask students to bring their faculty eval to conferences and read it out loud; <strong><em>this is no longer a common practice.<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Awarding Incompletes.&nbsp;<\/strong>Evergreen\u2019s current policy\nfor offering incompletes for up to four quarters puts us in tension with\nfederal policies and processes for returning financial aid funds. As we look to\nmake recommendations for changing our current policy and processes, we ask that\nyou consider only providing students, to whom you know you will be awarding <em>some<\/em>\ncredit, with a thirty-day extension. This would not only remove any conflict\nwith meeting federal policies and processes, but also will not drag student\nincompletes out. &nbsp;Particularly important is whether the student earns any\ntype of credit.<strong>&nbsp;If you will be awarding no credit, this must be posted\nby the college\u2019s evaluation due date, which is within two weeks of the end of\nthe term.&nbsp;<\/strong>We will be in touch with you in the weeks ahead about recommendations\nfor shifting these practices and policy. For now, please consider no more than\n30 days for incompletes, and please document the credits that have been earned\nin the online record system at the end of the program.
