Spring Break Remote Teaching Support

Dear Evergreen Faculty,

We are experiencing a unique moment in Evergreen’s history — a rapid transition to remote teaching.  There is no doubt that this is a big lift for all of us at a time of stress and uncertainty.   This is certainly not the way any of us would have chosen to start spring quarter; however, I continue to be heartened by the many ways you all have stepped into this challenge and am deeply grateful to be engaged in this work with the amazing faculty and staff at Evergreen.

The guiding principles Brandon Bayne penned in his adjusted syllabus remind us that “nobody signed up for this” and that the “humane option is the best option”.  This is a moment all of us will remember for the rest of our lives — and I know you will do everything you can to prioritize supportive relationships with your students as we work to build our collective resilience. Many of them will be frightened and traumatized, especially those who are already vulnerable. You all have the power to be a stabilizing force in their lives by ensuring that all students have an equitable, flexible path to success in your courses and programs.

So many of you have shared great online teaching resources with our team in the past few weeks, and we’ve posted many of them on the KT Canvas site. I do want to remind everyone, though, that what we are doing in this moment of crisis is not the same thing as building a conventional online curriculum from the ground up. Our team has been calling what we’re doing “remote teaching” — both because we may be using a variety of kinds of technology (including the phone) and because what we’re doing is adapting your original pedagogy to a distance learning environment, not building what would be traditionally recognized as an online course. 

I believe there are many reasons why Evergreen is especially poised for a rapid transition to remote teaching and I shared them here.

As you continue to translate your course or program to a remote teaching environment, the Learning and Teaching Commons in partnership with the Keep Teaching (and Learning) Team continues to provide support.  Below we’ve outlined the ways in which you can connect with us and your colleagues to seek (and offer) support for the work we have ahead of us.

JOIN THE KEEP TEACHING CANVAS COURSE

SIGN UP FOR A THEMED DISCUSSION

Small group sessions will be offered via Zoom throughout Spring Break to puzzle through moving teaching and learning into a remote environment.  Sessions are hosted by by JuliA Metzker, Director for the Washington Center for Improving Undergraduate and guests have been invited to consult directly with you. These small group sessions are limited to 20 participants.

  • Tuesday, March 24, 11am – 12pm – Conducting Seminar While Teaching Remotely
  • Wednesday, March 25, 11am – 12pm  – Remote Teaching and Student Accommodations 
  • Thursday, March 26, 9:30 – 10:30am – Open Topics – Bring Your Teaching Puzzle
  • Thursday, March 26, 11am – 12pm  – Alternatives to Lab- & Studio-Based Instruction
  • Friday, March 27, 11am – 12pm  – Community Based Learning and Remote Teaching
  • Friday, March 27, 1 – 2pm – Conducting Seminar While Teaching Remotely

TEACHING CONSULTATIONS

Additional opportunities for tapping into support include:

  • Virtual one-on-one or teaching team consultations with Joli Sandoz, Commons Faculty Scholar, or JuliA Metzker, Director of the Washington Center for Improving Undergraduate Education.  Send an email to learningandteaching@evergreen.edu to request an appointment
  • Starting Week 1, the Learning and Teaching Commons and Academic Technology staff will be available every Friday at 2:00PM through zoom to provide open consulting sessions. (90 minute, open discussions). Starts Week 1 of Spring Quarter.  Details forthcoming.
