Dear Evergreen Community,

As we strive to cultivate a campus culture that fosters a positive learning and working environment for students, faculty, and staff, consider the following results from our campus climate assessment:

  • Last year, approximately 1/3 of our students of color and 1/2 of our staff and faculty of color experienced at least one instance of discrimination because of their racial or ethnic identity.
  • 59.5% of our faculty of color agree they have to work harder than others to be valued equally at Evergreen. In comparison, only 23.4% of our white faculty expressed similar sentiments.
  • At 73.2%, our staff report the highest levels of any group reporting frequent interaction with people who hold different racial or ethnic identitiest than their own. Within work units, we may begin to see the positive effects of these conversations: 70.3% of our staff of color agree that their ideas are seriously considered and 68.9% feel that they have a voice in decision-making.

How may we make our campus more welcoming for students, faculty, and staff, especially our communities of color? How may we cultivate a campus culture that empowers all Greeners to pursue a lifelong commitment to practicing anti-racism? Explore these questions and others during a brown bag workshop and community conversation with Hannah Simonetti, Director of Campus Climate & Belonging.

This is the second in a series of monthly series of events hosted by the Campus Climate Workgroup. Upcoming topics include Unlearning Gender (April 8 & 22), and Unlearning Ableism (May 06 & 20).
