Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship Celebration

at SEM 2 A1107 , June 1, 2016, 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM

On Wednesday, June 1 (WK10) the college will once again be sponsoring an all-campus celebration of undergraduate advanced research or creative scholarship.
This event is meant to provide recognition for students who are doing close, mentored work with faculty on advanced research or creative projects. This includes students who have been registered for “Undergraduate research with…”, “Advanced research in…”, “Advanced projects in…” and students doing advanced faculty-mentored contracts during the 2015/16 school year. It also includes students doing faculty-mentored senior thesis work.
This event will also be an opportunity to recognize students who completed Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) in 2015 and welcome the students selected for the 2016 SURF program.

This event was funded by the provost office thanks to Michael Zimmerman and is organized by the “Committee for Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship”. The committee was formed in order to provide an avenue for supporting advanced faculty-mentored research and creative work at the college. If you have questions about the committee or are interested in joining the committee, please contact me or the Agenda Committee directly.

at 508 Legion Way SE , June 3, 2016, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

During the winter of 2016, I conducted audio interviews and made portraits of individuals in the street community of Olympia, WA.

I spoke with ten people about their lived experiences, and the complex and often charged interactions between those who have houses and those who do not. Interviews were conducted in public spaces and feature the background noise of the city, emphasizing the necessity of constant motion and the lack of privacy faced by those without stable housing.

Through the stories of these individuals, I seek to give audiences insight into the diverse array of experiences, challenges, and histories carried by those without houses. I also seek to provide a platform for “speaking back” against stereotypes and misconceptions.

The project’s title, “Houseless” is a product of many conversations with interview subjects as well as other folks in the street community, and their assertions that the title “homeless” implies not belonging, and not being capable of belonging. Many say that the only thing setting them apart is their lack of a house, not their ability to be “at home” in their community.

PLEASE NOTE: Venue has stairs and there is no elevator! Sorry for the inconvenience.
