{"id":210,"date":"2016-05-20T16:09:42","date_gmt":"2016-05-20T23:09:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/irishdrama\/?page_id=210"},"modified":"2016-05-20T16:09:53","modified_gmt":"2016-05-20T23:09:53","slug":"the-green-fields-of-america","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/irishdrama\/songs\/the-green-fields-of-america\/","title":{"rendered":"The Green Fields of America"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Farewell to the groves of shillelagh and shamrock<\/p>\n<p>Farewell to the girls of old Ireland all round<\/p>\n<p>May their hearts be as merry as ever I would wish them<\/p>\n<p>When far away across the ocean I&#8217;m bound.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Oh, my father is old and my mother quite feeble;<\/p>\n<p>To leave their own country it grieves their heart sore,<\/p>\n<p>Oh the tears in great drops down their cheeks they are rolling<\/p>\n<p>To think they must die upon some foreign shore.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But what matter to me where my bones they be buried<\/p>\n<p>If in peace and contentment I can spend my life<\/p>\n<p>Oh the green fields of Canada they daily are blooming<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s there I&#8217;ll put an end to my miseries and strife.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Then it&#8217;s pack up your sea stores and tarry no longer<\/p>\n<p>Ten dollars a week isn&#8217;t very bad pay<\/p>\n<p>With no taxes or tithes to devour up your wages<\/p>\n<p>When you&#8217;re on the green fields of Amerikay.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The sheep run unsheared and the land&#8217;s gone to rushes<\/p>\n<p>The handyman&#8217;s gone and the winders of creels,<\/p>\n<p>Away across the ocean, good journeyman tailors<\/p>\n<p>And fiddlers that play out the old mountain reels<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ah but I \u2018mind the time when old Ireland was flourishing,<\/p>\n<p>When lots of her tradesmen could work for good pay<\/p>\n<p>But since our manufacturies have crossed the Atlantic<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s now we must follow to Amerikay.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Farewell to the dances in homes now deserted<\/p>\n<p>When tips struck the lightning in planks from the floor<\/p>\n<p>The paving and crigging of hobnails on flagstones<\/p>\n<p>The tears of the old folk and shouts of encore.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For the landlords and bailiffs in vile combination<\/p>\n<p>Have forced us from hearthstone and homestead away<\/p>\n<p>May the crowbar brigade all be doomed to damnation<\/p>\n<p>When we\u2019re on the green fields of Amerikay.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The timber grows thick on the slopes of Columbia<\/p>\n<p>With Douglas in grandeur two hundred feet tall<\/p>\n<p>The salmon and sturgeon dam streamlet and river<\/p>\n<p>and the high Rocky Mountains look down over all.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Over prairie and plain sure the wheat waves all golden<\/p>\n<p>The maple gives sugar to sweeten your tay<\/p>\n<p>You won\u2019t want for corn cob way out in Saskatchewan<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re on the green fields of Amerikay.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And if you grow weary of pleasure and plenty<\/p>\n<p>Of fruit from the orchard and fish from the foam<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s health and good hunting way back in the forests<\/p>\n<p>Where herds of great elk and wild buffalo roam.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s now to conclude and to finish my ditty<\/p>\n<p>If ever friendless Irishman chances my way<\/p>\n<p>With the best in the house I will treat him, and welcome,<\/p>\n<p>At home on the green fields of Amerikay.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Farewell to the groves of shillelagh and shamrock Farewell to the girls of old Ireland all round May their hearts be as merry as ever I would wish them When far away across the ocean I&#8217;m bound. &nbsp;
