{"id":168,"date":"2016-05-20T15:43:51","date_gmt":"2016-05-20T22:43:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/irishdrama\/?page_id=168"},"modified":"2016-05-20T15:43:54","modified_gmt":"2016-05-20T22:43:54","slug":"the-disturbance","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/irishdrama\/poems\/the-disturbance\/","title":{"rendered":"The Disturbance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A bomb shatters the silence of George Street,<\/p>\n<p>sending clouds of dust down chimneys.<\/p>\n<p>In seconds the dull thud dies away,<\/p>\n<p>only a milk bottle rolling over the pavement<\/p>\n<p>disturbs the silence with its circular sound \u2013<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unshaven men in pyjamas stand like convicts<\/p>\n<p>framed in the doorways of their cells,<\/p>\n<p>or lean out windows like old farmers<\/p>\n<p>on wooden gates, staring over concrete fields<\/p>\n<p>whose walls hold nothing in.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Women half dressed, still warm from sleep,<\/p>\n<p>hold children\u2019s hands and let tired faces hang<\/p>\n<p>like flowers withering after daylight or water.<\/p>\n<p>While behind them kettles whistle<\/p>\n<p>and toast burns under the grill.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Along another quiet road,<\/p>\n<p>a man, pedaling an old bicycle,<\/p>\n<p>whistles a familiar Irish air<\/p>\n<p>as he creaks up a hill towards home,<\/p>\n<p>the morning paper in his pocket,<\/p>\n<p>secure, folded like a job well done.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Tony Curtis<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A bomb shatters the silence of George Street, sending clouds of dust down chimneys.
