What is SPP? <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The Sustainability in Prisons Project (SPP)<\/a> was founded by The Evergreen State College and Washington State Department of Corrections (WA DOC) to bring science and nature into prisons. We offer education<\/a>, conservation<\/a>, sustainable operations<\/a>, and community contribution<\/a> programs that involve hundreds of partner organizations and individuals.<\/p>\n

For Evergreen, SPP\u2019s programs allow students, faculty, and staff to practice science, sustainability, and restoration in a highly collaborative setting, and to learn from folks outside academia. For WA DOC, SPP\u2019s programs bring in education, attention, positive energy, and meet the needs of underserved audiences. For everyone involved, the programs challenge us to learn across cultural groups and expertise, and the experience has the power to transform lives.<\/p>\n

SPP started small in 2003, and has grown and evolved enormously. Each initiative is shaped to benefit everyone involved, and that requires continuous adaption to needs, resources, and limitations. Programs at each facility are unique and ever-changing. Now all 12 Washington State prisons<\/a> are part of SPP, and our innovative approach is internationally famous.<\/p>\n

SPP embodies Evergreen\u2019s way of learning <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

SPP\u2019s model<\/a> is born out of Evergreen\u2019s values. SPP\u2019s four managers are Evergreen graduates, grad students coordinate many of our programs, an Evergreen faculty member co-directs SPP, and many of the DOC staff in our programs are also Greener Grads. Our approach exemplifies Evergreen\u2019s Five Foci<\/i><\/a>:<\/p>\n

  1. Interdisciplinary Study<\/b>: incarcerated students, DOC staff, and partners tackle complex, real-world issues (environmental, social, & economic) with diverse expertise.<\/li>\n
  2. Collaborative Learning<\/b>: we share learning and break down isolation by seeking input from all concerned parties and finding common ground.<\/li>\n
  3. Learning Across Significant Differences<\/b>: we recognize, respect, and bridge differences between academics, incarcerated adults, partners, and correctional staff; everyone\u2019s <\/i>ideas have value.<\/li>\n
  4. Personal Engagement<\/b>: we develop our capacity to evaluate, speak, and act on the basis of reasoned beliefs informed by attentive listening, observation, and investigation.<\/li>\n
  5. Linking Theory with Practical Applications<\/b>: we test abstract theories by putting them into practice in demanding, real-world situations.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
