We have examined C flux below ground using scanner-based minirhizotron technology (CI-600), IRGA technology, estimation of total below-ground carbon allocation, root excavation, and (in collaboration with other labs) nitrogen mineralization and microbial community techniques. Our work has focused on three systems: 1) the inter-mountain west cottonwood hybrid system between native\u00a0<em>Populus<\/em>\u00a0trees\u00a0<em>P. angustifolia<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>P. fremontii<\/em>\u00a0(since 2001)<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/Merriam-Powell\/cottonwood-ecology\/\">More about the Cottonwood System<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.poplar.nau.edu\/\">.\u00a0<\/a>2) second-growth temperate rainforests on the Evergreen College reserve (minirhizotron and IRGA work since 2006).\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/academic.evergreen.edu\/projects\/EEON\/\">More about the EEON project<\/a>\u00a03) East Cascades ponderosa pine systems (Sinlahekin valley, WA &#8211; since 2008).<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"519\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"53\" height=\"197\"><strong>Root Scanner: <\/strong>The CI-600\u00a0 is a scanner based technology which takes large underground images (21.59 x 19.56 cm) in buried 6.99 cm diam. acrylic tubes.
