{"id":213,"date":"2026-03-06T19:18:05","date_gmt":"2026-03-06T19:18:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/evergreenleg\/?p=213"},"modified":"2026-03-07T02:25:29","modified_gmt":"2026-03-07T02:25:29","slug":"budget-leaders-behind-doors-for-final-push","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/evergreenleg\/2026\/03\/06\/budget-leaders-behind-doors-for-final-push\/","title":{"rendered":"Budget leaders behind doors for final push"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>March 6, 2026\u2014With six days left in the legislative session, lawmakers are rushing to finalize key pieces of legislation needed for the state&nbsp;to resolve its&nbsp;revenue shortages,&nbsp;and&nbsp;pass&nbsp;operating, capital and transportation&nbsp;budgets.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of March 3,\u00a0House and Senate\u00a0leaders\u00a0are \u201cin conference,\u201d privately negotiating\u00a0with each other\u00a0to reconcile the\u00a0amended\u00a0House and Senate operating budget proposals.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Evergreen, the&nbsp;Senate&nbsp;proposal&nbsp;restores the $2.7&nbsp;million&nbsp;cut&nbsp;levied on the college last session and&nbsp;imposes $101,000&nbsp;in administrative&nbsp;cuts. The House&nbsp;proposal&nbsp;restores $1.345&nbsp;million&nbsp;of the cut and imposes a $150,000&nbsp;administrative&nbsp;cut.&nbsp;Our focus throughout session has been to&nbsp;persuade legislators to fully rescind the $2.7 million, which Governor Ferguson did in his budget proposed in December 2025.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier today, state Democrats and Governor Ferguson came to agreement on&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/BillSummary\/?BillNumber=6346&amp;Year=2025&amp;Initiative=false\" target=\"_blank\">SB 6346<\/a>, which would impose a new 9.9% tax on household income over $1 million a year. It\u2019s&nbsp;estimated this&nbsp;\u201cmillionaires\u2019&nbsp;tax\u201d&nbsp;could raise&nbsp;$4 billion&nbsp;a&nbsp;year, with money going to K-12 and higher education, health care, human services, and the working families&#8217; tax credit. The legislature is expected to pass the latest version of the bill, and the governor says he will sign it when it gets to his desk.
