Executive Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is a stigma which persists that African-Americans care less about environmental issues, when in fact these issues affect communities of color first hand. B<\/span>y<\/span> <\/span>drawing on the <\/span>historical <\/span>link<\/span> <\/span>of slavery and <\/span>African-American<\/span> <\/span>spirituality I contest <\/span>the idea that African-Americans are stereotypically out of touch with nature<\/span>. <\/span>As important as current social concerns of eradicating <\/span>racial barriers in education, racial intolerance in job procurement, and excessive use of force upon African-Americans by law officers<\/span> environmental equality is of <\/span>equal <\/span>importance<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>In lieu<\/span> of these concerns<\/span>, recent years has seen <\/span>e<\/span>nvironmentalism take a back seat in the consciousness of African-Americans. <\/span>In a research paper<\/span> on <\/span>Environmental <\/span>Education<\/span> <\/span>Kahn<\/span> and Friedman<\/span> <\/span>(<\/span>1998) <\/span>put<\/span> forth<\/span> that<\/span>, \u201cBlack communities in the U<\/span>nited <\/span>S<\/span>tates<\/span> are disproportionately subjected to large amounts of environmental pollution and environmental hazards; however, little is known about this group<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s environmental concerns, understanding<\/span>s<\/span> and values.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
