{"id":1300,"date":"2026-02-10T13:43:38","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T21:43:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/ccas\/?p=1300"},"modified":"2026-03-09T11:59:00","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T18:59:00","slug":"transitions-for-the-climate-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/ccas\/transitions-for-the-climate-center\/","title":{"rendered":"Transitions for the Climate Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Evergreen Community,<\/p>\n<p>We wanted to provide an early update about some important transitions underway for the <a id=\"OWA55acfcd6-933e-6ede-a63d-7d37cf522b78\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" title=\"https:\/\/www.evergreen.edu\/academics\/experiential-learning\/centers-institutes\/climate\" href=\"https:\/\/www.evergreen.edu\/academics\/experiential-learning\/centers-institutes\/climate\"><span style=\"color: #339966\">Center for Climate Action and Sustainability<\/span><\/a>. A more formal in-depth announcement will be coming soon, but we felt it was important to share this\u00a0initial\u00a0overview\u00a0now\u00a0so our campus partners, students, and community collaborators have time to understand and prepare for the changes ahead.<\/p>\n<h2>Transition to \u201cThe Climate Center\u201d\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Beginning this winter and continuing through\u00a0spring\u00a0quarter (until June), we will be\u00a0operating\u00a0in a transitional mode\u00a0as\u00a0the\u00a0current <b>Center for Climate Action and Sustainability (CCAS)<\/b> transitions into <b>The Climate Center<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>This shift reflects our desire to simplify our identity, clarify our mission, and take stock of what is working well and what needs to be strengthened. During this transition stage, we will be conducting program evaluations, refining our core services, and preparing for a \u201c2.0\u201d launch of sustainability at Evergreen beginning after June.<\/p>\n<h2>A Hybrid Model: Facilities + Academics\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The biggest change will be our funding model.\u00a0The Climate Center will become a hybrid unit combining elements of the former <b>Office of Sustainability<\/b>\u00a0(under Facilities\/Operations)\u00a0with the\u00a0current\u00a0academic-\u00a0and\u00a0community-facing programs of CCAS.<\/p>\n<p>This hybrid structure will allow us to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Continue offering the climate literacy programming, workshops, and classroom visits our students and faculty rely on.<\/li>\n<li>Increase campus-wide sustainability support through Facilities &amp; Operations.<\/li>\n<li>Help develop\u00a0Evergreen\u2019s\u00a0next generation of sustainability planning through data-informed and community-informed processes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Half of our work will directly support the campus\u2019s long-term sustainability operations and infrastructure, while the other half will\u00a0maintain\u00a0our academic engagement, outreach, and public service programming.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Programming Changes &amp; Continuity\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Most of our public-facing programming will continue with only modest adjustments to our capacity. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nOur <b>Climate Lecture Series<\/b>\u00a0will transition from ~six\u00a0guest\u00a0lectures per year to three larger, more\u00a0ambitious\u00a0guest\u00a0lectures by\u00a0visitors\u00a0supplemented\u00a0with\u00a0public campus lectures by Evergreen faculty.\n<\/li>\n<li>\nWe\u00a0are planning a <b>Summer Institute<\/b>\u00a0where faculty can\u00a0help co-select the year\u2019s upcoming guest speakers and collaborate\u00a0on\u00a0grant proposals to fund them.\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<b>Workshops, classroom talks, and community presentations<\/b>\u00a0in Evergreen classrooms and off campus\u00a0will continue\u00a0(and in some cases\u00a0increase).\n<\/li>\n<li>\nOur <b><u><a id=\"OWA5591a663-090b-d724-3726-2af3e7825bb9\" class=\"Hyperlink SCXW144505403 BCX0 OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/ccas\/resources\/resources-projects\/#:~:text=The%20Sustainability%20CO%2DLAB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sustainability\u00a0Idea\u00a0Lab<\/a><\/u><\/b> consulting program\u00a0will grow into a more structured, recognizable resource for supporting student and\u00a0community\u00a0nonprofit sustainability projects.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Sustainability Action Plan &amp; Campus Initiatives\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>A major emphasis of Sustainability at Evergreen 2.0 will be helping the institution move toward a renewed and integrated sustainability vision. This includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nWorking with Facilities and campus leadership to incorporate a modernized <b>Sustainability Action Plan<\/b>\u00a0including student well-being and health\u00a0into the\u00a0Master Infrastructure Plan\u00a0(formerly the Climate Action Plan).\u00a0Supporting renewable energy expansion on campus\u00a0through\u00a0projects such as the <u><a id=\"OWA7ff79870-fa21-4445-04a9-ee7fbb8dae71\" class=\"Hyperlink SCXW144505403 BCX0 OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thurstontalk.com\/2025\/04\/03\/the-evergreen-state-college-students-lead-universitys-largest-solar-expansion-on-olympia-campus-to-create-clean-energy-and-savings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thunderdome solar array<\/a><\/u>\u00a0and related efforts aimed at reducing Evergreen\u2019s long-term energy costs.\n<\/li>\n<li>Assisting\u00a0in evaluating and updating approaches\u00a0with <b><u><a id=\"OWA3c382570-1ee7-bc99-aeff-c9a66aee3326\" class=\"Hyperlink SCXW144505403 BCX0 OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/cleanenergy\/history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)<\/a><\/u><\/b>\u00a0to\u00a0ensure we are aligned with current state and regional sustainability best practices.\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div role=\"presentation\">Focusing on campus health, well-being, ecosystem resilience, and climate adaptation.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Leadership Transitions\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The current Director of CCAS will be transitioning into full-time teaching in the MES Program. During this transition:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nThe Assistant Director will assume many of the responsibilities previously associated with both the former Director of Sustainability and the CCAS Director.\n<\/li>\n<li>\nThe role will\u00a0also have\u00a0a new title: <b>Assistant Director for Campus\u00a0Sustainability <\/b>reporting\u00a0to the\u00a0Dean of Native Programs and Experiential Learning.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This position will continue to\u00a0maintain\u00a0community partnerships and public-facing workshops, while increasingly helping campus units design and implement sustainable operational practices.<\/p>\n<h2>Continued Student Support &amp; Advisory Roles\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>We will\u00a0maintain\u00a0our advisory and liaison roles with several campus groups and committees, including the Clean Energy Committee (CEC), the Campus Sustainability Council,\u00a0Space-Land Use Group (SLUG),\u00a0and various academic pathways. We will also continue\u00a0facilitating\u00a0student-led sustainability projects, supporting internships, and collaborating with off-campus partners across the\u00a0South Sound region\u2014focusing on\u00a0youth education, community climate programming, and K\u201312 curricular development.<\/p>\n<h2>Feedback &amp; Participation\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>As part of our transition, we are gathering feedback from students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community collaborators who have worked with us. We will also be circulating a short feedback form soon to help us gather input systematically.<\/p>\n<h2>Looking Ahead<\/h2>\n<p>The team has many projects and upcoming events\u00a0in\u00a0progress, from continued expansion of <u><a id=\"OWA982b5ab9-ac41-8acc-db0d-355920508bdc\" class=\"Hyperlink SCXW144505403 BCX0 OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.southsoundeconetwork.org\/new-page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">regional partnerships<\/a><\/u> and increased faculty collaboration initiatives to ongoing project support for students and community organizations.
