{"id":240,"date":"2021-02-01T12:23:20","date_gmt":"2021-02-01T20:23:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/capfoodag\/?p=240"},"modified":"2021-06-04T07:38:23","modified_gmt":"2021-06-04T14:38:23","slug":"terroir-an-ensemble-of-knowledge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/capfoodag\/terroir-an-ensemble-of-knowledge\/","title":{"rendered":"Terroir:  An Ensemble of Knowledge"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 data-canvas-width=\"605.8720000000001\">A Senior Year Reflection by Annie Sloan &#8217;16, currently studying Law and Food Policy, U of MI<\/h4>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"605.8720000000001\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"605.8720000000001\">My academic work was grounded in the belief that food is intrinsically social and stimulating.<\/div>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"587.664\">This thinking inspired me to create \u201ctasting seminars\u201d and multicourse theory-based meals.<\/div>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"512.4479999999999\">These included tasting through some of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2016\/09\/04\/470547500\/remembering-culinary-griot-and-npr-commentator-vertamae-smart-grosvenor\">Vertamae Smart-Grosvenor\u2019s writing<\/a>, a<\/div>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"63.072\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.evergreen.edu\/evergreenmind\/a-once-in-a-lifetime-culinary-experience\/#respond\">21-course dinner<\/a> submersion into an Evergreen education, and serving my <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.evergreen.edu\/evergreenmind\/dr-donna-haraways-work-interpreted-through-food-by-emily-dunn-wilder\/\">interpretation<\/a> of<\/div>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"106.624\">&#8220;The Companion Species Manifesto&#8221; to its author, <a href=\"https:\/\/humanities.ucsc.edu\/academics\/faculty\/index.php?uid=haraway\">Donna Haraway<\/a>. I was also able to write a senior thesis arguing for the importance of terroir, or \u2018an ensemble of knowledge\u2019 regarding the things we consume, while recognizing that nativist-populist sentiments can be found in the local food movement.
