Simon is a tall 6’5 hawty Italian, who has no problem telling you what he thinks!
Whenever he sees me he sings, “money, money, money” and “capitalist girl, you exploit people like your country?” Haha. I can’t help but laugh because I know a lot of people feel this way and they often say it too but not in a such a direct way.
Simon likes to make mean jokes and you can tell he was the bully at school. He points out obvious things and makes them mortifying too you. He says Italians make the best pasta and pizza and nobody could tell him otherwise.
So finally, after all this I challenged Simon to show us this incredible pasta that he boasts about everyday. Me and my German friend Pascow bought the supplies. Beans, onions, tomatoes, and noodles all mixed together and cooked into a large pot. At first, I was mortified, asking myself what is this about? And laughing to myself.
We all sat down at the table, around 15 of us with wine and smiles, waiting patiently for the unveiling. Out came three pans, and he sat down across from me smiling big. Everyone got their plate and began to stuff their faces. Nobody said a word at all. He looked around anxiously waiting for us all the say something!
I appreciated this moment so much. First, because I have not once in two weeks seen Simon vulnerable in any way! Second, because with all the prideful and obnoxious speak, I didn’t have a chance to recognize how big his heart was. He was overjoyed after hearing our praise and receiving good comments. Feeding everyone gave him satisfaction and fed his ego at the same time. It was beautiful!
I think of Simon differently now. I think that his ego and pride fuels him but his heart makes him tick.
I feel love from Simons mean comments because I know that if he didn’t care, he wouldn’t bother to speak to me. We are good friends and it’s always good to see him along the way!
