Clifford Owens<\/a>\u00a0makes photographs, videos, performances, paper-works, installations, and texts. His works have appeared in many solo and group exhibitions, both nationally and internationally. Owens\u2019s solo museum exhibitions include \u201cAnthology\u201d at the Museum of Modern Art PS1, \u201cBetter the Rebel You Know\u201d at Home in Manchester, England, and \u201cPerspectives 173: Clifford Owens\u201d at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. \u201cRadical Presence: Black Performance in Contemporary Art,\u201d \u201cGreater New
York 2005,\u201d \u201cFreestyle,\u201d and \u201cPerformance Now: The First Decade of the New
Century.\u201d His on-going, performance-based projects have been widely presented in museums and galleries, including the Museum of Modern Art, Baltimore Museum of Art, and Brooklyn Academy of Music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Owens graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Rutgers University,\u00a0and studied at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and the Whitney Museum\u00a0Independent Study Program. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, a William H.\u00a0Johnson Prize, an Art Matters Grant, a Louis Tiffany Comfort Award, a New York\u00a0Community Trust, a Lambent Foundation Fellowship, and the Rutgers University Ralph\u00a0Bunche Graduate Fellowship. Owens has been an artist in residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem, Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program, MacDowell Colony, and Artpace. Publications, reviews, and interviews about his work have appeared in Art in America,
The New York Times, Village Voice, Modern Painters, Artforum, The New Yorker, BOMB, The Wall Street Journal, The Drama Review, Performa: New Visual Art Performance, Rethinking Contemporary Art and Multicultural Education, Why Art Photography? and Anthology, his exhibition book. He has written for several exhibition publications, The New York Times, Artforum, and Performing Arts Journal. His works are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Baltimore Museum of Art, and the Studio Museum on Harlem.
Owens has been visiting faculty, critic, and lecturer at many institutions, including the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Cooper Union, Yale University, Columbia University, Williams College, New York University, Lafayette College, Virginia Commonwealth University, New York University, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He is currently Guest Faculty at Sarah Lawrence College.
Owens was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He lives and works in New York City and Jersey City, New Jersey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
