Week 8 is Evergreen’s own, Miranda Mellis! on Wednesday, May 19th, 2021 from 11:30-1PM

Miranda Mellis is the author of Demystifications (Solid Objects, 2021); The Instead, a book-length dialogue with Emily Abendroth (Carville Annex, 2016); The Quarry (Trafficker Press, 2013); The Spokes (Solid Objects, 2012); None of This Is Real (Sidebrow Press, 2012); Materialisms (Portable Press at Yo-Yo Labs, 2009); and The Revisionist (Calamari Press, 2007).

Her stories and essays have appeared in various publications including Harper’sThe BelieverConjunctionsThe New York TimesThe Kenyon ReviewDenver QuarterlyFenceMcSweeney’s and elsewhere. She is a regular contributor to The Believer. She has received a National Endowment for the Humanities grant and the John Hawkes Prize in Fiction and has been an Artist in Residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts and Millay Colony. She was a co-founding editor of The Encyclopedia Project with Tisa Bryant and Kate Schatz and currently teaches at The Evergreen State College.

Amanda K. Davidson: Wednesday, May 18th, 2016, 11:30-1pm in the 2nd floor Recital Hall of the COM Building

Amanda Davidson writes, draws, and makes performances in Brooklyn and Los Angeles. Her prose chapbooks include Arcanagrams: A Reckoning (Little Red Leaves 2014), The Space (Belladonna 2014), and Apprenticeship (New Herring Press 2013), and she is the founding editor of Occasional Remarks: Prose Chaps and Audio Tracks. Davidson’s fiction, reviews, and comics appear in the Brooklyn Rail, the Believer, and Weird Sister, where she’s serializing a graphic novel called The Conditions of Our Togetherness. She’s been a writer-in-residence at MacDowell, Art Farm Nebraska, Millay, and I-Park, and received a 2014-2015 Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace Residency, and a 2014 NYFA Fellowship in poetry.

Steven Hendricks: Wednesday, May 20th, 2015, 11:30-1:00 pm in Lecture Hall 1

Steven Hendricks was born in Omaha, Nebraska. He moved out west to attend Evergreen. He completed his MFA in Writing at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and then returned to Washington to teach at Evergreen. Hendricks’s work has appeared in The Denver Quarterly, Web Conjunctions, Fold: The Reader, The Encyclopedia Project (Vol. 2), Sidebrow, and at XCP (archived at PennSound, 2005). Hendricks is also a practicing bookbinder and letterpress printer. His artists’ book work, Breathing Machine, appears in Lark Books’ anthology 500 Handmade Books: Inspiring Interpretations of a Timeless Form. He has shown artist book works in galleries in Olympia, Portland, and Seattle. His first novel, Little is Left to Tell, was published by Starcherone Books in the Fall of 2014.

Miranda Mellis is the author of The Spokes (Solid Objects, 2012); None of This Is Real (Sidebrow Press, 2012); Materialisms (Portable Press at Yo-Yo Labs, 2009); and The Revisionist (Calamari Press, 2007). The Revisionist has been translated into Italian by Leonardo Luccone (Nutrimenti, 2008) as well as Croatian by Zoran Rosko (Quorum, 2009). It was a finalist for The Believer 2007 Book Award. Mellis has received The John Hawkes Prize in Fiction, The Michael Harper Praxis Prize, and an NEH Independent Research Grant. Marilyn Freeman: Wednesday, January 26, 2011 12:15-1:30-Lecture Hall 1

Marilyn Freeman is an interdisciplinary, process- and time-based artist living in Olympia, Washington. Her work is characterized by themes of identity, tolerance, faith and alienation. Baptism is the first in a series of autobiographic essays and installations about growing up Catholic.  Freeman’s contemplative film work, collectively entitled, CinemaDivina, is screened in spirituality centers as well as film and arts venues.  Freeman’s experimental feature film, Group, distributed by Frameline, was released on DVD in 2009 following its 2002 theatrical run and extended educational market release. In addition to numerous accolades for directing and producing, Freeman has received financial support from The Arch & Bruce Brown Foundation, Centrum, and the Washington State Artist Trust in the form of a Media Arts Fellowship and a Gap Grant for her screenplay, Sophisticated: The Hollywood Story of Miss Dorothy Arzner.  Freeman’s film, Meeting Magdalene (1995), played festivals worldwide and led to her short story collection, Meeting Magdalene (Naiad Press, 1996). Presently, Freeman is in post-production with The R Word, a feature-length documentary about the self-advocacy movement of people with developmental disabilities. She holds a BFA in Theater from the Cornish College of the Arts and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College. She is a Visiting Artist at  The Evergreen State College and  cofounder of the media arts studio, Wovie.
