Week 9: Women in Latin American Experimental Animation, Wednesday, 3/6, 2019 7-9:20pm in Purce Hall 1

Experimental animation reinterprets, reorganizes and challenges the material, technical, narrative and affective conventions of animation established by mainstream studios. While the participation of women in this field has become more and more visible, their work has not been sufficiently exhibited or discussed, nor have their varied and singular perspectives. To recognize the important contributions that women have made to the field of Experimental Animation in Latin America as directors, animators, artists, art directors, and sound engineers, Moebius Animación has curated Women in Latin American Experimental Animation, an exhibition of short films by Latin American women and women of Latin American descent. Join us for this screening of films, presented by co-curator Lina X. Aguirre.

The program features women animators from Latin America exploring multiple techniques like drawing, stop-motion, time-lapse, found footage and paint on glass to produce an exceptional program of experimental animation.

LIna X. Aguirre is a member of Moebius animación, a curatorial and critical project dedicated to Latin American experimental animation. Moebius has curated a selection of 16 short films from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, produced between 2007 and 2014 by independent filmmakers and artists. This compilation is the result of their effort to map out the artistic field of experimental animation and its intense dynamic during the last decade. They have defined trends in the technical, narrative, material, and sensorial/affective dimensions of the works. Screening (85 min.)

A vibrant selection of contemporary experimental animation from filmmakers in Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Peru.  Curated by the Moebius Animación collaborative, these 16 short films produced between 2007 and 2014 represent an effort to map trends in technical, narrative, material, and sensorial/affective dimensions in recent experimental animation.

“Bruce Conner’s Atomic Sublime Cinema”

San Francisco-based artist Bruce Conner made his first experimental film, A MOVIE, in 1958, at the height of national anxiety about the atomic threat. Over the following decades, his films continued to address the cultural and political fallout of the Cold War. This talk examines Conner’s filmic output over two and a half decades, from his pioneering works of “found footage” montage, to his participation in psychedelic expanded cinema performance, to his more intimate portraits of female friends and later interest in music video. It argues that these works are expressions of the “atomic sublime,” an aesthetic that captures the paradoxical experience of “terrible beauty” that is generated by witnessing an atomic explosion. By attending closely to the historical and cultural context of Conner’s apocalyptic cinema, this talk proposes a reconsideration of postwar American art’s engagement with the aesthetics of “the sublime.”

Johanna Gosse is an art historian specializing in the postwar American avant-garde, with an emphasis on experimental film and media practices. She earned her PhD in the History of Art from Bryn Mawr College in 2014 with a dissertation on the experimental films of San Francisco-based artist Bruce Conner. Her writing has appeared in journals such as Camera ObscuraMIRAJ: Moving Image Review & Art JournalRadical History ReviewThe Journal of Black Mountain College Studies, various exhibition catalogues, and Abstract Video: The Moving Image in Contemporary Art, an edited collection forthcoming from the University of California Press in 2015. Naima Lowe: Wednesday, October 23, 2013, 11:30-1:00, Lecture Hall 1

Naima Lowe is a 34 year old Queer, African-American artist and educator based in Olympia, WA. Her films, videos, performances and writings have been seen at the Athens International Film and Video Festival, Ann Arbor Film Festival, Anthology Film Archive, The Knitting Factory, The Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific Islander Experience, The Stella Elkins Tyler Gallery, The International Toy Theater Exhibition, and Judson Memorial Church.

Her first film “Birthmarks” was a Student Academy Awards Finalist, won Best Experimental Film at the Newark Black Film Festival and was honored for Best Sound Design in the NextFrame International Student Film Festival. Her collaborative performance and installation Mary and Sarah and You and Me made its New York debut at the historic Judson Memorial Church.

Naima has been recently working with letterpress printing, hand made 16mm film, and other forms of archaic producible visual media. Her 40 page, limited edition, looseleaf book Thirty-Nine (39) Questions for WHITE PEOPLE was shown at the Wing Luke Museum in Seattle from May-November 2013.

Naima is currently a member of the faculty at the Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA.

Marilyn Freeman: Wednesday, January 26, 2011 12:15-1:30-Lecture Hall 1

Marilyn Freeman is an interdisciplinary, process- and time-based artist living in Olympia, Washington. Her work is characterized by themes of identity, tolerance, faith and alienation. Baptism is the first in a series of autobiographic essays and installations about growing up Catholic.  Freeman’s contemplative film work, collectively entitled, CinemaDivina, is screened in spirituality centers as well as film and arts venues.  Freeman’s experimental feature film, Group, distributed by Frameline, was released on DVD in 2009 following its 2002 theatrical run and extended educational market release. In addition to numerous accolades for directing and producing, Freeman has received financial support from The Arch & Bruce Brown Foundation, Centrum, and the Washington State Artist Trust in the form of a Media Arts Fellowship and a Gap Grant for her screenplay, Sophisticated: The Hollywood Story of Miss Dorothy Arzner.  Freeman’s film, Meeting Magdalene (1995), played festivals worldwide and led to her short story collection, Meeting Magdalene (Naiad Press, 1996). Presently, Freeman is in post-production with The R Word, a feature-length documentary about the self-advocacy movement of people with developmental disabilities. She holds a BFA in Theater from the Cornish College of the Arts and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College. She is a Visiting Artist at  The Evergreen State College and  cofounder of the media arts studio, Wovie.
