5/24 Wednesday, Week 8: Dr. Vuslat D. Katsanis

 
Vuslat D. Katsanis is a scholar of comparative literature, film, and visual culture with a focus on Turkish and global migrant cultural productions and critical theory since 1989. Currently a professor in the Literary Arts and Studies path of study at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA, Katsanis is also the cofounder of MinEastry of Postcollapse Art and Culture (MPAC), an independently-run curatorial project and research space in Zurich, Switzerland. She has published essays on the films of Nuri Bilge Ceylan and Fatih Akin, translated a number of short fiction and poetry between Turkish and English, coedited a volume on teaching writing, and together with MPAC, curated several contemporary multimedia art exhibitions in the Pacific Northwest and Southern California with upcoming programming in Switzerland and Türkiye. Katsanis holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Irvine, with a certificate of emphasis in Critical Theory and a M.A. in Visual Studies.

 

In this panel, Katsanis will join artist and MPAC cofounder Ilknur Demirkoparan in conversation with Suriname-based filmmaker, Keoni K. Wright, and the American painter, Charles Edward Williams, with whom she is co-curating Play, a multimedia contemporary art exhibition opening on June 9, 2023, in Zurich. The panelists will discuss their individual art practices as well as their collective outlook toward the future through a shared interest in worldmaking and joy. The “play” theme is inspired by the historical role of artist-run initiatives for refugee artists during the first two world wars, and specifically, the playhouse that the Dadaists established in Zurich to sustain hope amidst a fury of political and social upheavals.
 

2/1 Wednesday, Week 4: Neely Goniodsky

 

 

Neely Goniodsky has directed and animated over twenty-five short films including productions at the National Film Board of Canada, The New York Times, and Seattle University. She holds a master’s degree in Animation from Royal College of Arts, London, and a bachelor’s degree in Animation from Concordia University, Montreal. Neely has been animating for over 15 years with her works reflecting an ever-ongoing search for new styles and expressions. Neely is interested in interpreting the human condition through abstract narrative and visual experimentation attempting to translate reality into visual poetry. She explores a combination of traditional animation techniques including ink and paint on paper, cut-out collage, under the camera animation, computer drawing, and 2D computer animation. Beyond animation, Neely’s works include video installations, paintings, drawings, and collage.

1/18 Wednesday, Week 2: Charles Edward Williams

Charles Edward Williams is a contemporary visual artist from South Carolina. He holds a BFA from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Georgia and an MFA from the University of North Carolina Greensboro (UNCG). Williams has attended summer artist residencies at Otis College of Art and Design (CA), SOMA (Mexico City, Mexico), the Gibbes Museum (SC), and the McColl Center for Art and Innovation (NC). Solo traveling exhibits include “Sun + Light,” “Warm Water,” and “Swim.” “Sun + Light” has been on view at Polk Museum of Art (FL), Gibbes Museum of Art (SC), and Residency Art gallery (LA). “Warm Water” has been on view at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (MI), SECCA (NC), and Weber State University (UT). “Swim” was displayed at Morton Fine Art (DC). His work was also recently exhibited at Aqua and Scope Art Fart / Art Basel (FL) and Texas Contemporary Art Fair (TX).

Miranda Mellis is the author of Demystifications (Solid Objects, 2021); The Instead, a book-length dialogue with Emily Abendroth (Carville Annex, 2016); The Quarry (Trafficker Press, 2013); The Spokes (Solid Objects, 2012); None of This Is Real (Sidebrow Press, 2012); Materialisms (Portable Press at Yo-Yo Labs, 2009); and The Revisionist (Calamari Press, 2007).

Her stories and essays have appeared in various publications including Harper’sThe BelieverConjunctionsThe New York TimesThe Kenyon ReviewDenver QuarterlyFenceMcSweeney’s and elsewhere. She is a regular contributor to The Believer. She has received a National Endowment for the Humanities grant and the John Hawkes Prize in Fiction and has been an Artist in Residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts and Millay Colony. She was a co-founding editor of The Encyclopedia Project with Tisa Bryant and Kate Schatz and currently teaches at The Evergreen State College.

Gilda Sheppard is currently a member of the faculty in  Sociology, Cultural and Media Studies at Evergreen State College in Tacoma, Washington.  From 1995-96 Sheppard was a visiting lecturer at University of Cape Coast in the Sociology, Anthropology and Demography Department, and in 2018 she was a visiting lecturer at Ashesi University in Ghana, West Africa.

Sheppard is an award-winning filmmaker who has screened her documentaries throughout the United States, and internationally in Ghana, West Africa, at the  Festival Afrique 360 in Cannes,  France, and in Berlin Germany at the International Black Film Festival. Sheppard is a 2017 Hedgebrook Fellow for documentary film and a 2019 recipient of an Artist Trust Fellowship.

Her documentaries include stories of resilience of Liberian women and children refugees in Ghana; three generations of Black families in an urban neighborhood in Buffalo, New York; and a film ethnography of stories from folklore started by Zora Neale Hurston in Alabama’s AfricaTown.

She currently completed her documentary Since I Been Down on education, organizing and healing developed and led by incarcerated women and men in Washington State’s prisons. Since I Been Down has been accepted at over10 film festivals in USA and Canada and won the Gold Prize at the Social Justice Film Festival and recognized among “Best of the Fest” at DOC NYC the largest documentary film festival in USA. Since I Been Down has been praised by Distinguished Professor Emerita, University of CA, Santa Cruz Angela Davis, at a DOCNYC 2020 Facebook Live Event with Director Gilda Sheppard, King County (WA) Prosecutor Dan Satterberg, and Executive Director of Abolitionist Law Center Robert Saleem Holbrook.  Seattle Met named Since I Been Down as “What to Watch” in 2020.

For over a decade Sheppard has taught sociology classes in Washington State prisons, Sheppard is a sponsor for the Black Prisoner’s Caucus in Washington State, and is a co-founder and faculty for FEPPS- Freedom Education for Puget Sound an organization offering college credited courses at Washington Correctional Center for Women.

Sheppard is the author of several publications including Culturally Relevant Arts Education for Social Justice: A Way Out of No Way (2013)

Starting this Friday 2/5 at noon and ending Wednesday 2/10 at 5pm, the film will be exclusively available to the Evergreen community for asynchronous streaming in the “virtual screening room” that we have created for “Reimagining Community Safety.” (Please note: no recording of any type will be allowed.)

Art Lecture Series, week 6: Anne de Marcken from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm Wednesday, 11/4 2020

Anne de Marcken, former Greener! is a writer and interdisciplinary artist. Her credits include durational writing projects, hybrid narratives, short and feature-length films and site-specific installations. She approaches creative work as a process of critical inquiry, centering questions of impermanence, invisibility and the abject. She is author of the lyric novella The Accident: An Account (Spuyten Duyvil, 2020), and her writing has appeared in Best New American VoicesPloughsharesNarrativeEntropy, on NPR’s Selected Shorts and elsewhere. Recent process-based installations include Hinterlands of Paris (2020), Paris Chopped & Screwed (2019), Invisible Ink: Homeless (2018), Invisible Ink: Reparations (2017) and The Redaction Project (2016). She is also known for the gender-queer experimental feature Group (2002). Anne is editor and publisher of The 3rd Thing, an independent press dedicated to intersectional, interdisciplinary work. Anna Joy Springer is the author of “The Vicious Red Relic, Love” (Jaded Ibis, 2011), an illustrated fabulist memoir with soundscape by Rachel Carns and Tara Jane O’neil “Your Metaforest Guidebook”, as well as “The Birdwisher, A Murder Mystery for Very Old Young Adults” (Birds of Lace, 2009). Her work appears in zines, journals, anthologies, and recordings. An Associate Professor of Literature at UC San Diego, Springer teaches experimental writing, feminist literature & graphic texts and also leads public meditation groups focusing on sensation, emotion, and imagination. She’s performed in punk and queercore bands Blatz, The Gr’ups, and Cypher in the Snow and toured the U.S. with the writers of Sister Spit.

Week 8: Former Greener! Carol Rashawnna Williams, Wednesday, November 20th, 2019, 11:30-1pm in the Recital Hall of the COM Building

Born in Topeka, Kansas in a military family, Carol Rashawnna Williams is the only child of Bessie Williams & Willie C. Williams. Soon after birth Carol and her family moved to Frankfurt Germany where she grew up on a military base and went to German schools until she was 11 ½. At which time she and her mother settled in Tacoma, WA. Carol graduated from Mount Tahoma High School, went to the Evergreen State College, was an Upward Bound student of 4 years.

Carol’s mother was a certified missionary and gave her life to community service for over 25 years, feeding and sheltering those who were homeless. or re-entering society from prison. Carol’s father was a patriot and believed in American Democracy. He gave 28 years of his life to his country through military service.

After graduating from college Carol was accepted as a Vista-Americorps for 1 year in Seattle’s White Center neighborhood working with young single mothers of Head Start students get jobs and get into school. Carol had her first group exhibit at the Seattle Central Community College Gallery in 1990 when she attended Seattle Central College, it was a community college.  Her second group exhibit was in 1996 at the Evergreen State College at which time her work was acquired and catalogued into The Evergreen State College’s (TESC) video art library and showcased into the TESC student anthology book.

Carol is a mother to 2 children. She currently resides in Seattle, WA and works to mentor emerging artists from various backgrounds.  Carol is a musician of 21 years who plays the violin and the viola. Carol enjoys hiking in the Pacific Northwest’s numerous old growth forests. Carol was certified thru the City of Seattle Parks & Recreation Urban Forest Educator Program and loves to teach about conifers, indigenous and invasive species.  You can find her walking all over Seattle.

Carol deeply believes in the power of art to build community, bridge community relationships and create authentic space for healing.

Week 6: Former Greener! PLATO guest lecturer! Austen Brown, Wednesday, November 6th, 11:30-1pm in the Recital Hall of the COM

Austen Brown is an artist living in Chicago, IL, holding his Master of Fine Arts from the School at the Art Institute of Chicago, where he is a Lecturer in the Sound Department. Using a site-based practice, he works with sound, video, and installation to draw conceptual lines between sites, using buildings as evidence to investigate histories of urban planning.
His work has been shown internationally at Super-Sensor, Madrid, Spain; The Chicago Artists Coalition, Chicago, IL; The Mission, Chicago, IL; EXPO Chicago, IL; Switched on Garden with funding from the Pew Charitable Trust, Philadelphia, PA; Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, Wilmington, DE; Rebekah Templeton Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, PA, among others.

Week 2, Eirik Steinhoff: Wednesday, April 11, 2018,11:30-1:00 pm, in the Recital Hall, COM Building

Eirik Steinhoff teaches and co-teaches interdisciplinary programs with titles like “How to do things with words,” “Imperialisms,” “Forensics,” “A New Middle East,” “Literary Arts Toolkit,” “Words/Woods,” and “Gateways for Incarcerated Youth” at The Evergreen State College, where he has been a Visiting Member of the Faculty since 2013.  

He has also taught courses on Shakespeare, Early Modern Poetry, critical theory, rhetoric, poetry, and poetics at the University of Chicago (where he got his Ph.D. in English), Bard College (where he got his B.A.), and Mills College. 

In the early 21st century he was the editor of Chicago Review, and in 2009 his translations from Petrarch’s Rime Sparse appeared as Fourteen Sonnets from Albion Books (San Francisco). 

In 2010 he taught at Green Haven Correctional Facility in NY state under the auspices of the Bard Prison Initiative, and in 2014 he co-facilitated a seminar with faculty at Al-Quds University in Palestine. 

He co-edits Black Box: A Record of the Catastrophe, and he works with students and teachers behind bars in Washington state under the auspices of the Black Prisoner Caucus’s T.E.A.C.H. program (“Taking Education and Creating History”). 

The bulk of his study in the classroom and beyond revolves around two questions: “What needs to be the case for things to be otherwise?,” and “How do we make our knowledge common?”

Week 8 – Molly Zuckerman-Hartung, former Greener ! Wednesday, May 23rd 2018, 11:30-1:00pm in the Recital Hall, COM Building

Molly Zuckerman-Hartung is a painter, writer and teacher who grew up in Olympia, Washington (attended TESC), and participated in Riot Grrl in her formative years (the 1990s.) Now she is working and grocery shopping and taking walks in Connecticut with her girlfriend and dog. She is an autodidact who is opening her attention to pattern and repetition, difference, learning, feedback loops, nostalgia, dolls, Victorian collage and textiles, John Coltrane and Miles Davis, Gees Bend quilts, the effects of soul lag on humans, high theory, low theory, kitsch, Modernism, affect theory, coloring crayons, tissue paper, the parergon, tactility, Elizabeth Bishop, the color of the light in the bare woods, and the emotional landscapes of students, friends, colleagues and strangers alongside whom she lives.

Also, she is a full time Lecturer in Yale School of Art, Department of Painting and Printmaking. She has shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, The 2014 Whitney Biennial, The Program at ReMap in Athens, Greece, Kadel Willborn in Karlsruhe, Germany and many many others. In 2013, she received a Louis Comfort Tiffany Award. She is a frequent guest lecturer at many schools across the country, including, in the past year, Princeton University, The University of Texas at Austin, University of Indiana at Bloomington, University of Alabama, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago Low Residency Program, and Columbia University, She is represented by Corbett vs Dempsey in Chicago and Rachel Uffner Gallery in NYC.
